I did it!!!

I managed to talk (with a little help but I supplied most of the information) my first Doula couple out of circumcising their perfect little bundle of baby boy! Isn't that wonderful?

The mom was leaning more towards circ'ing so I focused on her. The hubby struck me as more complacent, like he would go along with whatever she wanted. Her first reason to have him circumcised was that "it's commanded in the Old Testament". I was prepared for this reason and reminded her that Jesus* died as the final sacrifice so God no longer needed foreskins. To my amazement she wanted to circ not because of that, but because she thought that it was commanded by God so it just has to be right, no matter what. I was at a loss of words for that.

But fortunately, she wanted to talk to me more about it. It helps that DH and I have our 10 m/o intact, and that I'm very verbal about being anti-circ. I just kept reminding her that it was an elective surgery on her newborn, that it can be done later but not undone (unless he wanted to regrow), gave them information about the function of the foreskin on the baby and adult. Also reminded them of how they literally rip the skin off the newborn.

Sad thing, the poor husband is circ'd--they told me--and he seemed saddened by his own loss. Poor guy.

~Nay, so happy!

* I am not religious--atheist actually, but man, does it help to have a working knowledge of the Bible for situations like these!

That's great! Glad you talked them out of it.

I've heard that argument before - if God commanded it for His People, then it can't be a bad thing. I always point out that God commanded it as a pretty major sacrifice - you had to really WANT to follow God to be willing to have part of your penis cut off.

Glad you had the necessary working knowledge of the Bible in this case! It does always amaze me when Christians want to circumcise for 'religious' reasons...

Go! Go! Go!

Most folks who have two working brain cells to rub together will come to the anti circ conclusion is somebody will show them the way. It's fantastic that you could be that guide!

That's the best news I've heard all day.

I sometimes point out that for Christians, Jesus brought the New Law, and put an end to the Old Law.

There is a place in the Old Testament that God commanded some people to be killed. If God commanded it, then it's a good thing, but without a commandment from God, it's just cold-blooded murder.

In the Old Law, circumcision was good because God commanded it. However, without a commandment from God, it's just cutting up the body of a child.

And of course, for Christians, God no longer commands it (Thank God!)

That's awesome I love hearing success stories I was able to talk a friend out of circ'ing who also mostly wanted it done for religious reasons. I was raised atheist so know nothing. Thankfully there are some excellent websites I was able to direct her to.

Thanks for sharing!

I did some research on biblical circing and the other bit of Bible info on circ to know is that in biblical times, circ was only cutting off a few millimeters of the foreskin. It was later on when Jewish men tried to look like their gentile counterparts by hiding this cut that the rabbis chose to make the cut more drastic, hence removing the entire (or atleast trying to) foreskin. So if one really does believe in biblical circ, it would not be the same as the circ doctors perform today (though I completely agree that it was the old law, not the new!).
