What age is recommended for Waldorf doll?

I really want to make DS a Waldorf doll at some point. At what age would you recommend that he will be able to enjoy it/ appreciate it/ take care of it?

What age was your DC when s/he got a Waldof doll?

My DS has just turned one.

Thanks!

Hi Mama Scout,

You can start off with one of the sort of rounded legless type right away. They have a minimum of parts and just a dab of hair (usually sort of peeking out of a hood) and can stand up to a lot of rough handling.

I would wait until 2 or 3 for a proper waldorf doll with all the legs and arms and so forth.

One little girl I knew just had a piece of cloth with a bit of wool tied into the middle. She adored her doll so much her mom had to sneak it away when she was asleep to wash it.

My granddaughter who is now 5 1/2 has a baby type waldorf doll she got two years ago when her little brother arrived. She loves it dearly. She still tucks it under her shirt occasionally and pretends to be pregnant. She also carries it around in a sling.

My grandson also has a couple of waldorf dolls to sleep with. Sometimes he plays with dolls during the daytime, too, cuddling them, covering them up.

Toymaking with Children has a very simple doll that you could make will a playsilk, you just stuff some wool into the middle to form a head, and tie it off with some string, and knot some arms. I made Kaelynn one like this when she was around 1, a smaller playsilk than a 35" would probablly be better, in a very pale, soft colour, ours was just slightly yellow. It was her first baby, and even our nieces and nephews used to fancy plastic dolls like it after some initial jokiness about its unformed state. They rocked it in the cradle etc. etc.
