Newest Mothering?

Thread Starter
I picked up a copy of Mothering yesterday because I was sure it would be full of hate mail because of the last column that said circing was an option that parents should make informed choices about (or something like that) but I didn't see any hate mail, nor an explanation from Peggy O. that said "I was wrong; circing should not be an option for parents."

Anyone else? Did I just miss it?

Is the new issue out already? If she doesn't say anything about it in this or the next issue, I'm going to cancel my subscription.

ETA: I feel much better after asking her about this in chat today. She remains very much opposed to RIC and I think it was a matter of unclear writing/poor editing as to why that paragraph came across as wishy-washy.

I do hope she will publish a clarification though to clear up the misunderstanding. But I am keeping my subscription!

Same here. How pathetic, and kind of wimpy to be honest. WHat a HUGE disappointment.

I just posted a new thread on this in ACtivism. It will be up after Adina reviews it and approves it.

Frank- didn't you write a letter? Did anyone get any responses to their letters?

I still have my letter in draft form. I tried to get it done, but my son or I had been sick for 4 weeks, my dh is now sick and I'm just so behind.

Now I'm mad at myself for not getting my letter done.

I hope a lot of us sent letters in or will NOW send letters in. Not all of the letters to editor are from the last issue, so it is not to late.

I'm not sure what Mothering's production lead time is, but they may be one of the many magazines that puts letters in two issues later, not one. That's pretty common.

I'm a subscriber and you'd think I'd remember how long it takes them to put letters in, but I can't (and I pass my copies on, or I'd drag one or two out to see).

I wrote my letter and got no response, not even a form letter.

I think you're right. I'm fairly sure the letters are typically two issues later.

Most magazines also do not send out letters (even form letters) in response to letters they receive. I'm not trying to defend Mothering (I think if they don't publish some of the letters they have received on this topic, it would be a disgrace)--just trying to explain some of the (unfortunate?) realities of publishing a large, national, monthly magazine (I've worked in publishing for nearly 20 years )

Every time I have sent an email to the mainstream mags (Parents, Parenting and Child), and I have done that numerous times, I have received a form letter. You know, the usual...thanks for sharing your thoughts...blah blah

Also, most magazines are monthly, hence the turnaround is too quick for them to publish letters in the next issue, so it takes them 2 issues. Mothering is bimonthly, so I would think they could do it in the next issue...but maybe not, we'll see.

Now I'm wondering whether none of our letters got passed on to Peggy....

My post in Activism regarding this is STILL not up. Adina sent it to Cynthia for approval....I wonder if this is normal for all threads, or just mine since it's about Mothering magazine.
The title was "Mothering let me down again". I wasn't blasting the mag btw, just encouraging people who felt the same as me to let Peggy know. A regular call to activism.

That is really disappointing. And to think I was considerign buying up to three subscriptions for myself and a couple of friends.

I don't think I will, now.

Ah, now I know what you mean! it's true that many (but not all) mags have an auto-reply feature that acknowledges receipts of email (they probably don't acknowledge written letters or faxes). I guess I don't consider those real responses, as they are done by computer and are usually sent out by the e-mail system before a person has even read them. I am guessing Mothering doesn't have such an e-mail system? I have e-mailed them before and don't recall receiving an auto-reply (or any reply at all!).

I wrote a letter to Fit Pregnancy about a recent issue. The lead story was "bonding with your amazing newborn" or something along those lines. They mentioned the "stress" of the baby going for his newborn pix with the hospital photographer...and then threw in an off-hand mention of "then he was circed, and went home."

I wrote a letter. I got a personal acknowledgment of the receipt of my letter (as I had done when I wrote to them about a couple of misstatements on breastfeeding - although of all the mainstream mags out there, they are the best on promoting bfing even though they accept formula ads). I got a second email saying they might use all or part of my letter in an upcoming issue.

Here's a link to the story: http://www.fitpregnancy.com/newlife/30

Alex stands for one more ritual--having his picture taken by the hospital's photographer. And finally, in the early evening, the urologist performs Alex's circumcision in the nursery. At 7 p.m., 48 hours after his birth, he is ready to go home. The nurse removes his ID bracelets and homing device, and Anya bundles him up in his traveling clothes and straps him into the car seat. A wheelchair is brought up for Mom (hospital policy), the car seat with Alex in it is placed on her lap, and Ed wheels them out, to the farewells of the nursery staff.

A friend of mine, an herbalist, wrote a letter to Mothering a few years back. It was in response to a doctor's article, or maybe letter, that discussed how pregnant women basically should not use herbs. Raspberry leaf tea can be bad so don't drink it, that sort of thing. She wrote a very thoughtful rebuttal, well researched...someone from the magazine contacted her, they talked...she was very excited that her letter would be printed.

The issue came out, and there was her letter...edited beyond belief to basically back up everything the doctor had said. It was about then that I let my subscription run out. I was out of money, moving to another state, and couldn't afford it anymore....but I wasn't quick to sign up again, either.

Actually, all the form letters I received were always somewhat personalized, not just the automated kind.

BTW, my thread in ACtivism about this is STILL 'pending approval', now with higher powers. I'm not sure why. Yes, it's about Mothering mag, but it's a call to action, as the forum rules dictate, and it was civil too!

I am extremely dissapointed Mothering has chosen NOT to respond to any of this I have let my subscription expire and won't be renewing.
