I have two boys with Down Syndrome. We don't cloth dipe,so the cost of diapers is quite extreme,We have begun potty training Manny, the 4 year old,but it could be a long haul!I had heard that our state medicaid, which the boys have as secondary, will cover diapers in children with special needs due to the developmental delay.I called and asked, and was aggressive when I got the transfer to this and that person yada yada.In the end,it was worth it,b/c I found out indeed they do,and simply with my ped's note("prescription")ALL our diapers will be 100% covered. They said it is after age 3,and they're billed as incontinence supplies.I wanted to pass this along in case anyone else might benefit from this!

My son just started recieving his diapers this way too,and it is such a great help!I'm glad your children were able to get this too.I had no idea it was so easy! His prescription is good for 6 months,if he still needs them after that, his dr just needs to sign again. They even come straight to our house, and when I call for more they are here in 2 days.Makes everything so much easier!
I'm not sure if your insurance works the same, but we can switch from diapers to pull-ups when ds is ready.

We've still got one more year until we are elgible, but I cannot wait. I feel bad about using the disposables, but I have no washer/dryer and of course no time either.

How do you go about this? What age qualifies? My DD is almost 3 and not anywhere near realizing things enough to PT. It will be years at least. I don't know if we qualify for Medicaid but I'm thinking of applying. It would be nice. She's growing out of size 6 diaper right now. What's next btw?

You will want to see if you can be approved for Medicaid first...we wouldn't have qualified by income but both our boys are adopted and have a dev.disability--Down syndrome. If you do qualify then you'll just need to see if your doctor/pediatrician would write an order for the pharmacy to fill for the diapers. The girl at our pharmacy said she thinks Medicaid here covers about $2000/year for diapers/incontinence supplies.I think it's from age 3 and up.We are using size 6 diapers,too-but they're plenty big and we are potty training the 4 year old right now.The ins. is covering trainers, also. If she outgrows the 6's you might check the Good Nights, they're available in bigger sizes.HTH!!

Depending on your state, you may qualify for a medicaid waiver or in some states it is called Katie Beckett wavier. The waiting lists for these can be very long however I know it Texas its about 7 yrs.

We live in MN and you can start getting your diapers paid for at age 4.
We haven't qualified for SSI for some time but DD still gets medical assistance through the state. I'm sure every state is different.
Also, if you want to see if your Ins. pays for diapers I would ask the pediatrician. They probably know and it may be easier to just take a prescription to good 'ole walgreens and see if it goes through instead of calling the Ins. companies or the state yahoos.
just my 2 cents

In California, where we moved from a year ago, it is the Regional Centers that administer state funds for devlopmentally disabled, who covers the cost of diapers.
