I just heard that someone is publishing the journal(s) of Kurt Cobain. Now, I was a huge fan and deeply obsessed with him when I was 17. But, I don't know if I should read his journal. Part of me wants to, but part of me thinks it is just a little too tacky. Any other fans out there? What do you think? Should he be left alone, or is it o.k. because he is dead?

I've been struggling with whether or not to buy this for DH for Christmas! I have the same weird feeling about it, too....I mean, it's the guys journals for crying out loud. And it has to be all about money, right? I mean why else would Courtney sell the them?
Anyway...I've read lots of reviews covering the controversy....typical courtney bashers, etc. saying she did it all for the money, etc...and that she took out a lot of the references to their relationship. Then on the other hand lots of other people supporting the journals being released (Nirvana's manager, friends of Cobain's etc)...all saying that he wrote his journals specifically for other people to read. That he was always asking others to read them, and that he'd want this.
Still, I think I've decided not to get it...I mean it might be interesting, but it feels a bit too voyeuristic and wrapped up in $ to me. And maybe still a bit too close to his death? I mean, I loved reading Sylvia Plath's journals...but for some reason that seemed more "okay"...Cobain hasn't been dead for that long yet!
Love to hear what others are thinking...especially if you've read them!

Haven't read it, but browsed it in a store. It is on my Yule list, b/c I can never have too much information on a subject that interests me. If we can read about the original Christ, Ghandi, John Lennon, then Kurt just follows. He is another Christ figure, IMO and the opinion of my 16 yo dd. Maybe not with the huge impact of the aforementioned, but still similar. Why not get deeper into a poet's head? We might learn something.

o.k. if Kurt let people read them when he was alive, then I will gladly read them! I wasn't sure if Courtney sold them or if a third party had them. I was hoping he would have written what a mistake he had made in marrying her, and how he was planning on leaving her and taking their precious kid. But if she had them, then there definitely won't be anything real about her in them!
I had always believed his intense stomach problems contributed to him staying hooked on drugs. I wonder if there is anything about that?

Oh yes, Courtney sold them... for several million dollars. She is, as The Stranger (local weekly paper) put it, "a train wreck of a human being" and will do anything for money. She is'nt even ashamed of the fact, when asked how she settled the dispute with Krist and Dave over the unreleased material, she said it was resolved with, and I quote, "lots and lots of money". I have no doubt that she perused the jounals and decided what would be printed and what would not. And frankly I would not be suprised if she had not only left things out that did not suit her, but to rewrite whatever she felt moved to as well.
It just really makes me sad for Frances Bean... her father meant so much to so many of us, yet his widow treats his legacy as any other commodity. It's not like the woman is starving and needs to put food on the table... is nothing sacred? I must say that we are both Nirvana fans, and we won't be buying the journals.
Yes, I have heard lots about how his stomach problems led to his heroin abuse... and I must say that before my ulcers were diagnosed and a proper therapy was started, I was seriously considering wether or not heroin would make the pain bearable... and I gave birth without drugs, so I think I have a decent pain tolerance. So I can't imagine what kind of pain that poor man lived with.
Maybe I am biased... I have yet to meet a Seattleite that would'nt spit in Courtney's face if the saw her around town. Probably why she bailed to Cali! I think it may be a requirement for residency to despise her... I'll check my lease and get back to you on that one

Oh, Kama... I can't imagine getting a bikini wax from someone who hated you!!!
You know, I think I would feel differently about the journals being published had it been Frances Bean making the decision to release them, say, in another 20 years... but Courtney is just all about money and she makes me sick. This year she did this *and* settled with Krist and Dave Re: the unreleased materials... makes me wonder if she has already burned through the considerable amount of money and royalties she recieved when he died... how many Kate Spade bags does an ex-junkie need, anyway? And I have to wonder if she really cleaned up her act, could explain why she feels justified with some of the things she has done...
I hope that some of the money ended up in trust for their daughter...

yeah, Courtney is scum. I remember I was 17 and a bunch of us were at a friends' house. It came on mtv that they had just got married. I locked myself in a closet and cried. I can't help but wonder if his life would have been different had he found a better woman. I think she pursued him really aggressively until he gave in. Too bad he didn't have more self esteem. She is like venom!! I also heard she tried to do the same with Trent Reznor after Kurt died.
Did you guys see the documentary "Kurt and Courtney"? It was pretty sad.
I think the best thing for Frances would be to end up nothing like her "mother". I hate to say something like that, but I think most would agree. Hopefully Kurt is looking over her.

Yeah, she did try to steamroll Trent Reznor as well, she just kept coming around... another guy who does'nt like confrontations and otherwise messy situations. She is a vampire, she just seeks them out. I have never seen "Kurt and Courtney" but I know she was none too happy about it, and that is a wonderful endorsement as far as I am concerned! I think it's so sad how Kurt's mother has to suck it up and stay on that whore's good side to have a relationship with Frances...
...and I hope that poor girl has some loving role models around her so she is'nt doomed to be like her mother. I can't help but wonder if she knows how many people hate Courtney and feel that she is in some way responsible for her father's death... even people who are hesitant to look into 'conspiracy theories' (and let me tell you, rumours were flying almost immediately here in the NW, the music community is very tight knit) will concede that she is evil and mean enough to have driven him (or anyone else!) to suicide.
