Its a boy!

My sil is pregnant with a boy. Crap now we have to have the circ talk. I was hoping it was a girl and I could just avoid the whole thing.

Do you think I should loan her a book, I have one and one on the way in the mail? Or just talk to her? Or where I'm leaning is to give her a short handout with basics and provide the book if she wants it.

I've found that keeping it simple- talking to her and giving her an article and a list of web links for research works best- most people won't take the time to read a whole book

I hit the high points like how it feels like having your fingernails ripped out and how it impairs sexual function...

I agree. If you're going to give her anything to read, keep it short and sweet - I think the Fleiss reprints from Mothering are good, also pamphlets from NOCIRC. But I would talk to her and find out why she wants to circ (if she does) so you can target the info correctly.

I'm assuming that she would because its "the thing people do" so more of a cultural choice. I am planning on approaching it from that angle, we live in the NW where the circ rate is the lowest of the nation. So I want her to know its not the normal thing to do anymore and its painful.
So no benefits and it actually causes damage is my angle.

I have something that I worked up that prints out on one page so I'll give that to her.

Well then I'd turn the tables on her and say how you'd be afraid a boy would be made fun of for being cut more than for being intact, what with the rate so low where you are - and he can always get a circumcision later if it's important to him, for whatever reason... but he can't undo a circ that she does at birth.

Kathy Howard, the intactivist responsible for getting the first nocirc billboard up, recently wrote about a strategy that has been working for her.

She simply lets people know that "it's out of style".

It's funny that people really are that superficial, that they'll let the fashion make the decision for them.

But, it seems to work.

Wow... "It's out of style" actually works?! My views of modern society just got even dimmer (just when I thought I couldn't think any worse of it than I already did ). Just... wow. And I thought one had to present people with facts and studies and such to change their minds. Nope! Just invoke the holy name of Fashion. Wow, again :

love and peace.

I get a lot of mileage out of "no one's doing it anymore." People really are that stupid.
