What is it about kids and bread crusts? - Page 2

I am here to tell you all that even Norwegian children leaves the crust.. :LOL

Noah doesn`t eat the crust. If I cut them of, and offer them on the plate with something to dip them in he sometimes will eat them. But not always.

And I kinda understand him. Crust doesn`t taste half as good as the rest of the bread.

Wow, there are 2 other people who were told that crusts would make their hair curly! I thought my mom made that up!

I used to eat the crusts of "squishy bread" like Wonder Bread, on the rare occasions when I got that kind at someone else's house. My mom made healthy homemade bread that I only really liked when it was fresh from the oven (this is still true) but was willing to eat the middle of; the crust was just too hard and dry and burny-flavored once it had cooled, esp. when the bread had been frozen and thawed. I prefered bagels (which of course have crust all over...) so those were my main source of toast and sandwiches. Now, I eat crusts of almost all breads and pizza just to avoid wasting them--I eat the crust first and then the good part.

Those of you who cut off crusts: What do you do with them? My mom used to save ours for bread pudding.

My neighbor was told about the curly hair thing by her mother, and she told the kids she babysits the same thing, well the little girl who has striaght hair like her mother cried and was like " I don't WANT curly hair, I want my hair to stay like mommys!" :LOL

When I cut off the crusts I give them to the dog and she is very grateful! :

As a kid I was told the "more vitamins" in the crust. I never believed it, but then again, never had a problem eating the crust. My dd (3.5yo) eats the crust. She's never had issues with that kind of thing. She likes the peels of fruit, too, so she doesn't seem to mind different textures.

Haha this is hilarious to me...
I absolutely HATE the crust. Can't eat it, makes me sick. My daughter eats it but I can't do it. I don't do pizza crust either unless there's cheese in it. Yuck to bread crust!!

LOL. I have a theory about this. I think that a lot of young children have certain instincts about how to eat certain foods that protects them from eating the "rinds" or non-nutritive parts. Last summer I gave a slice of watermelon to my kids - they'd never had it before. They ate up to the rind and then stopped. When I gave them their first piece of corn on the cob I never had to tell them how to eat it.. to stop at the tough cob part. And I've never had to tell them to stop eating when they get to the apple core. They just know. I think they perceive crusts to be "rinds" of some sort... some inedible part of the bread as evidenced by its different color/texture.

Anyway... that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

DD used to eat crusts and then stopped... Ds sometimes does and sometimes doesn't. I don't

After reading this thread I have decided that I will be trimming the crusts off all sandwiches. When DD was DS's age, I often cut her sandwiches with a cookie cutter... gingerbread boy, heart etc. I forgot I used to have time for that

I give the kids slices of apple with the peel on; DD has always eaten her peel; DS has always munched all the fruit right up to the peel and left the peel. :LOL

The crusts are my favorite part! As a kid I ate my friends crusts and gave them my middles. :LOL

I STILL don't eat crusts, but I didn't eat them b/c my big brother didn't and I wanted to be like him. I feed them to the baby, she likes them just fine :LOL

I don't like crust either so I guess I won't mind when ds decides he won't eat it :LOL Actually, if it's the squishy-yucky-bad-for-you bread I like hte crust just fine, it's just as soft as hte rest of the bread But we try to do whole grain bread which means usually thicker, heartier texture which I do like better, but the crust is so dry and icky I don't like the way it tastes or feels. I would swear that I have read somewher ethat htere really ar emore nutrients in the crust, something about the way it cooks or something? but I figure if I'm eating healthful style bread anyway and a generally good diet I'm not missing too much.

I always figured that babies only eat the crusts, then they go through some sort of "bread crust backlash" when they get to be toddlers. My seven year old ds is THRILLED that I'm always telling him to give his crusts to his llittle brother :LOL

My DD eats the crust first

I don't know, but I too thought that I would just never cut the crusts off and my dc would never want me to. Wow was I wrong. Out of the blue, dd (4) wants the crusts off. I just asked her why and she said "the crusts are harder to chew and I don't like them anymore, I can just give them to Jalen." One time I asked her where she found out about not eating the crusts and she said preschool, but given what I know about the place she went, it really doesn't make sense. I never asked though, maybe there was some kind of 3-4-5 year old revolt and they just decided not to fight it.

i personally LOOOOVE the crusts of bread. i think it's be best part of toast!

my daughter (who, granted, is only a year old), eats them no problem. people seem to get really weird about me feeding her crusts in the first place, which i find really strange. but. if she gets to the point where she wants her crusts off, i don't see a point in forcing her to eat them.
