Someone mentioned Matilda, so I have to throw The Witches out there. Another Roald Dahl one (again, book is better, but the movie is great, too).

Here's one that I saw recently -- for children 6 and older --Holes. It is a really really rich story whre a boy learns to stay true to himself and rise above what seems like an insurmountable challenge. No magic, which is something I really liked about it because so many movies now rely on magic and fantasy to propel and resolve the plot. But there are wonderful allusions to and images from the past connecting slowly to the present. DD (7) and all her friends adored this movie. Jon Voight is a total kick to watch. The music is great too.

But, you all have listed some great ones, too.

2nd the Shirley Temple movies. I was just metnioing to my mom that I want to get those for Caroline as she gets older. Plus Annie, Bringing up Baby (not really a kids movie, but I loved it when I was a gradeschooler)

I really want to look for more "classics" if we are going to be watching movies w/ our kids. Besides the major musicals (Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, etc.) can anyone help me think of more classic movies that would have some appeal for kids? I love old movies, but am drawing a blank. Sorry to slightly hijack the topic!

Bright Eyes might be a good one for them (airplanes feature prominently.)

For fans of Roan Inish, another amazing Irish film is "Into the West."

A few years ago we watched both Roan Inish and The Whale Rider within a few days of each other. The similarities were absolutely fascinating and led to some very interesting discussion.
