EDIT: Sorry I hadn't noticed the WSJ article was already posted.

I'd like to preface this by saying my son is NOT circumcized, and none of my children will ever be.

Yeah, just like it's offered the US hope...we have the highest rate of circumcised men and the highest rate of AIDS in the developed world....OOOPS there's something wrong with this picture!!

There are some more threads on this below. Letters to the editor would definitely be in order.

Reminds me of a quote I once heard:

"Compassion without competence is a cruel hoax"

In this case, people believing these lies would see the circumcisers as compassionate beacons of hope - until they find out they're dying.

Rush Limbaugh (sp?) was having great fun yesterday on his talk radio show making fun of anti-circ groups because of this African study. He is such an ignorant man for so many reasons. I truly hate that people will think circ, of course infant/child circ ,is the answer to Africa's horrible HIV epidemic.

I listened to Limbaugh a few times and quickly realized that he has few guests and no call-ins which insulates him from dissent and conflicting information and never listened to his show again. He is a man of incredible arrogance and an arrogant man is not an educated or intelligent man because he thinks he already knows it all.

So they took grown men and circumcised them. First, there's recovery time, not to mention the fact that sex feels different. My dad was circ'd as an adult (long story) deeply regretted it because sex felt different and I'm sure these men felt different too. Plus, ina society where circ isn't the norm, they have to hold themself to the standard of intact- so they look mutilated/different and probably felt insecure.

Not to mention the fact that they didn't even document how many risky encounters, sexual acts went on for each of these men, so there isn't really any comparison. This is totally irresponsible and I agree it gives a green light to circ'ed men to start engaging in unsafe sex.

I honestly have to wonder how biased and how exactly they tracked the sexual activity of these men. And of course, how many of them were exposed to HIV positive partners. Did any use condoms? Did the circumcised men even have sex that often due the recovery time (from what I understand, sex with a penis that's had surgery on it is likely very uncomfortable *duh*). This is a very poorly conducted study with too many variables. Now if they took 1,500 uncirced men, and 1,500 men circumcised from birth, ensured they all used the same (if any) preventative measures, and all had partners tested positive for HIV, it might be a bit more valid. From what I understand, most countries do not circumcise routinely, and have low HIV rates, so I think world experience sort of poo-poohs this study right in the face.

OMG

My ultra mainstream Rush loving FIL just e-mailed dh a link to the study. Apparently he is concerned for the health of our son
So know I want to email him some links. I will include the AAP's stance and I am looking for some others. He doesn't take NoCirc seriously so I am looking for some specific studies that prove that circ is unnecessary. I checked the stickies but couldn't quite find what I am looking for. Any ideas?

Yeah, send him a big picture of my middle finger and tell him to mind his own business. Why bother with a Rush Limbaugh type? He dones't CARE what you have to say. Just tell him to piss off. Tell him you'll get ds circ'ed when he starts engaging in promiscuous sex. Maybe that'll shut him up.

Veganmamma, While the temptation is there I think that would end pretty bad, especially for Dh. But thanks for the idea, it sure made me smile to think of his face on seeing that
