Rant about current movies

I don't think I can stand to read another article about how movie revenues are down this year. Have they looked at what's out there? It's like a summer of reruns at the movieplex.

Let's remake comic books:
* batman
* fantastic 4

Let's remake old movies
* The Longest Yard
* Bad News Bears
* Herbie
* Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Let's remake old TV shows
* bewitched
* hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
* honeymooners

Let's do another sequel!
* star wars
* batman

I'm sure there are lots more examples out there. There's nothing at the theatre that I really desperately must go to watch NOW.

I also can't stand that they're blaming internet piracy for low box office revenues, when in reality they need to look at what they're producing. (I mean, have you tried downloading movies? It takes a month to download a movie, and at the end of the process, half the time it's not what you wanted, or the recording quality is really bad.)

I don't mind.

I understand your rant.
I have given up getting my main movie fix from standard movie fare.
I am a movie snob and I had to come to terms with that.
I now see most of my movies on DVD or at the small arthouse movie theatres.

I think big blockbuster summer movies are really made for kids/teens and the special effects.
Since they're aiming for kids they can get away with remakes. I mean most kids don't know the originals.KWIM?

I totally agree about the remakes (Dukes of Hazzard is also coming to the big screen), but I don't think Hitchiker's Guide has ever been a TV show. The only think I'm looking forward to seeing (although I probably will wait until video) is the Chronicles of Narnia.

I'm a total nerd -- the TV show was done in England in 1984 (according to the IMDB, and reran here in Canada. All my friends and I watched it because, well, we're all nerds and geeks. Here's the BBC website for the original series. The special effects were really cheesy, but the series was still hilarious, especially if you like britcoms.

I'd forgotten about the Dukes of Hazzard coming to the big screen too. Bleh.

ITA the only movie I am remotely interested in seeing the summer is The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and even that I will probably wait to get from Netflix. I just hate how much it all costs, $8-$10 for the damn ticket and like $100 for soda and popcorn, which IMO you HAVE to get when at the theater. So we usually stay home.

We have taken the kids to see SharkBoy and Lava Girl and also Madagascar.

Well, if you want to get technical, Hitchhiker's Guide and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were books. (I'm not sure if any of the others were.) I do want to see both of those, but we don't go to the movie theater anymore. Maybe in a couple of years.

I do agree that movies are def lacking in originality. We get online rentals from Blockbuster, and there are very few new releases that we want to see and actually are movies we end up liking.

Yeah, books that were already made into movies. Kids these days...

And Hitchhiker's Guide was a radio drama, and War of the Worlds was a book and radio drama as well as a fine, fine musical.

I like the War of the Worlds movie well enough, however. And it seems like every year some of the films I enjoyed the most were adaptations of novels.

Johnny Depp in C&tCF is freaking me out too, but I'm getting more of a Michael Jackson come to Neverland vibe from him. Probably because I have done my best to avoid seeing A Clockwork Orange.

I thought War of the Worlds was too much, I actually fell asleep (can you believe?) also the Stephen Speilberg factor was too much.

I agree. I did really like Batman, mainly, because I think the story needed to be retold in a way that incorporated more Bruce Wayne and BW's history.

I used to be a real movie buff, but aside from the occasional jaunt to an indy flick and impatiently waiting for Serenity to be released in September I am outta the theaters.

Wow, didn't know that. Thanks for the link! If it ever shows up on BBC America, I'll have to check it out.
