YES! It took me a little while to get past that...I totally agree that there MUST be more to Petunia than we know. Maybe we'll learn more soon!

The night it came out (12am or whatever) my husband and 7 year old came home and we lay in bed reading until god knows what hour. I was reading aloud and when I came to that part, all three of us yelled, "WHAT?!" Just like Vernon Dursley! :LOL JKR got us with that one.

About Petunia...

So, what do you you guys think of the two way mirror? Why did Sirius even give Harry that? Odd, dontcha think?
sooooo - you think that Petunia is an ex-con?

Verrrrrrrry interesting, Victorian...

That would explain a lot. It would explain her hatred of all things magical. It would explain her freak-out when the dementors came around Privet Drive...

I wonder what she got sent to Azkaban for?

I thought Sirius gave it to him so Harry could contact him for help, from school. Harry forgot all about it until it was too late.

In the last big long thread, when the last movie came out, someone theorized that Ron might grow up to be Dumbledore, literally. Time travel and everything. Dumbledore's hair was red before it went white. Ron's hair is getting longer and longer. Something about Ron's thing for chocolate frogs and distaste for Bertie Bott's beans. Something about a scar on Dumbledore's knee that might match the one Ron got when he was dragged under the Whomping Willow.

Maybe Luna's character will grow on me in this next book. I still really think Harry belongs with Ginny. Luna is just too weird.

Oh, please Enough with the time travel theories!!! Has anybody forgotten that Dumbledore's first name is Albus and Ron's first name is Ronald? :LOL

Besides, do we even know if Ron got a scar from the Whomping Willow escapade? Madame Pomfrey's a darn good Healer!!
But, isn't that odd just to put in for Harry to then forget about it? Surely it must play a bigger role in this book. Maybe not, but it seems that JKR often throws little things in that she expounds on later. Like Arabella Figg.

That's a cool idea about Ron being Dumbledore. I wonder if Dumbledore is like a recycled soul or something...

Yeah, that's a good point about Madam Pomfrey.

But that was a sore point with me about all the Star Trek series'. Their doctors were always just as capable as the script needed them to be. If Commander Riker got a huge injury but was needed back on the bridge Doctor Crusher would just fix him up, no prob. But if the story required the nameless away mission guy to bite the dust then his injuries were always just too much for her to save him.

maybe Petunia is Snape's love and why he stopped being a death eater, then Vernon stole her away

And she was in Azkaban for having too much knowledge of the wizarding world and writing books under the pen name J.K. Rowling.....hmmmmm

Whatever happened to Fluffy???

I was wondering something while my whole family was re-reading the whole series this week:

After the Sorcerer's /Philosopher's Stone was destroyed, what did Hagrid do with Fluffy, the giant 3 headed dog?

okay so i was on JKR's site last night for the first time in a long time--it's very informative. And she addresses many of the issues we are discussing. I'm not sure if this should eb considered spoiler material, but just in case...
Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
She definitely does not deny that the barman might be Dumbledore's brother. Also, about Petunia, she says she's not a Squib and she is a Muggle but basically that there is more to her than meets the eye. And she emphatically states that the HPB is not Voldemort and that none of the characters have time traveled back, etc.
Interesting food for thought.
Also, I was wondering--everyone keeps mentioning someone dying but on her website I couldn't find anyplace where she says that but several places where she says not to believe everything you hear. I know with OOtP she came out and said that someone close to Harry snuffs it; has she made a statement like that this time and I've missed it? Or are we just assuming (probably rightly so) that someone will die because, well, how can someone not?
There were a few other things she said on her website that made me think and so I started rereading from the very beginning and am halfway through Sorcerer's Stone looking for clues :LOL That is one of the things I love about the series is that rereading, you notice so many things that seemed insignificant before but actually become important later on, like Mrs. Figg. I love a book that you can read several times and still find something you didn't notice before, ya know?
Off to read...

onlyboys--I wondered about the mirror too except that in OOtp at the end when he tries to see Sirius in the mirror and can't it says "Harry remained quite still for a moment, then hurled the mirror back into the trunk where it shattered." So maybe that's it for the mirror? Or maybe not because then it says he through his things into his trunk on top of the broken mirror...
On a slightly more mundane note, I'm dying to know how Harry did on his O.W.L.s! What a dork I am. :LOL

slightly OT but my son's friend is having a birthday party on Saturday and she just called today to see if we could come. It's terrible but my first thought since they live an hour and a half away and I'd have to leave town before the bookstore opened, was when will I pick up my book?!?! Of course I said we come...but didn't add we might be a few minutes late so we can get the book before we go...

Harry has a brother!

Seems like JKR was asked that in the FAQ on her website or someone suggested that Dumbledore was really Harry's grandfather or something and she say she had made it clear over and over again that Petunia was THE ONLY living blood relation of Harry's..

Would be cool though! I'd love to see him have more family..

A few more tidbits of info from JKR's website..

Will you write more Harry Potter books after the seventh?

If you mean more novels, then I think it highly unlikely. I’ve got enough story for seven books and I never planned to carry the story beyond the end of book seven. I might do an eighth book for charity, a kind of encyclopaedia of the world so that I could use all the extra material that’s not in the books... we’ll see!

Dumbledore is really Ron/Harry ‘from the future’

Your inventiveness knows no bounds, and I do not mean that sarcastically; these theories open up exhilarating new vistas of possibility… but they’re wrong. Could it be that by speculating that Harry/Ron becomes Dumbledore, you are seeking reassurance that neither dies young?

I’ve also heard a whisper about Ron and Hermione’s son time-travelling, so I shall go further and tell you that NONE of the characters in the books has returned from the future. As for the idea of Ron and Hermione having a son… (chuckles as the distant roars of a million shippers reach my ears, all cursing me to an eternity of unsatisfied curiosity).

The FAQ on her website is amazing..I went through and spent several hours reading everything because I'm a big dork and it really tells you alot...

Maybe the half blood prince is Hagrid!!!! I love Hagrid!!

I'm thinking about pulling OOTP off the shelf and rereading the last few chapters just to be caught up to date for Saturday!! I so can't wait!!

And this is what JKR has to say about the mirror Sirius gave Harry:

Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
The mirror might not have helped as much as you think, but on the other hand, will help more than you think. You’ll have to read the final books to understand that!

Anyone else watching "The Sorcerors Stone" on ABC Family tonight..It's the extended version..I'm watching "at it"..Seen it before of course!

Yippee! The mirror comes back!

I had forgotten that the mirror shatters. The thing is, nothing really is tossed in in her novels, you know? They seem so carefully crafted, which I think is one of the reason we love her novels so much!

I, too, have been thinking about how Harry does on his OWLS. I suspect that he will do poorly on Astronomy, poorly on Potions, well on everything else except Divination, which really doesn't matter anyway.

I don't really think it will matter which NEWT classes he gets in to, as I don't think he'll make it to be an auror, unfortunately.

Love talking about this...
What about the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher? My husband, who is lurking on this thread just brought that up.

Do you think Snape will get it, finally? Perhaps Dumbledore will just let Harry run his workshop?
I think Harry will do poorly on his Astronomy Owl with the whole Hagrid fiasco and his History of Magic OWL since that's when he had the vision about Sirius...He'll probably do poorly on his Divination OWL as well since he made stuff up..But he may be a seer and not know it!

Didn't Harry say he thought he did pretty well on his potions OWL when he didn't have someone breathing down his neck making him nervous..Thought I had read that..

I had forgotten about OWL results!! Now I feel like *I'm* waiting for exam results..

I truly hope that JKR allows Harry to live...I just can't see going through all this and not allowing good to triumph over evil..I now evil is present in the world but I just hope she would end it with Harry winning in the end. He'll have to go through a lot to get there and it won't be easy..But I truly hope he wins...

Sooooo, I mentioned earlier that we're going on vacation this week and I'm having the book delivered to my grandmother's house because I'm a big dork and I can't wait 36 hours to get home to get my book. I can't admit to my family I'm a big Harry Potter geek because I'd never hear the end of it. What should I *tell* them I'm having delivered. All suggestions are welcome!! :LOL

As for the Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher..Maybe Dumbledore will appoint someone in the Order. They won't have to be as secretive now since Voldy is out in the open. Maybe Kingsley Shacklebolt. Tonks would be awesome!!!

Also who will be the new Minister of Magic??
You could embarass them and tell them it's an economy size box of organic tampons! :LOL

On topic:

Harry may not make it. I've prepared myself for that possibility. :LOL But, for good to triumph over evil sometimes the good person must sacrifice him or her self. I'm thinking over history: Ganhdi, MLK, Jesus, etc. I do not want him to die, and I think he *will* win. I don't think there's any chance that she could leave it off with Voldy-thingy living and triumphing over good. That would piss everyone off!

Worse than Harry dying, I think, would be those around him dying and him living. If he had to grow into adulthood without Ron, Hermione, Luna, etc. I think it would be much more of a trauma.

Tonks would be incredible as a DADA teacher! Yay! I hope it's her, how fun.

Minister of Magic.... Is it too much to think Arthur Weasley?
I think it would be really sad for Harry to have to grow into adulthood without all his friends..He's already so alone in the sense of not having close family that cares for him..And it's interesting how you group Luna in with Hermione and Ron as Harry's closest friends..I just don't see her as playing a gigantic role in all of this..Maybe she will..I dunno..I can still totally root for Ginny and Harry getting together though!!

I think mugglenet has a statement on their info about books 6 and 7 that Arthur Weasly will NOT be the new Minister..

Ohhh..A horrible thought entered my mind just now..What if it's Lucious Malfoy?? He's always hanging around the Ministry and making donations and claimed to be bewitched into being on the dark side before..What if he got out of the Ministry before anyone saw him at the end of OOTP..But surely they wouldn't elect him..

Tonks would be awesome as DADA prof but I don't think she'd have enough exprience..She's only been an auror a few years..I think it will be Shacklebolt or someone new..But Dumbledore had a hard time filling the position before so who knows this time..

Okay I'm going to bed now!!
