I noticed in another thread that someone had asked about the book Parent Effectiveness Training by Thomas Gordon.
I didn't want this to get lost in that thread. I wanted to say that I liked that book. The first 2 chapters were incredibly boring, imo. The book is mostly about active listening and problem solving. His message is that it doesn't have to be win-lose with kids. It's not parent vs child. You can both be on the same team, you can be on your child's side, and everyone can win.
A better book, imo, is Loving Your Child Is Not Enough by Nancy Samalin. It's basically the same ideas, but in a more readable book. LYC is based on the work of Haim Ginnot, as is How To Talk So Your Kids Will Listen (It seems like PET is too, but I don't remember if TG said it was or not). LYC seems to go into more detail about daily issues than PET.
How To Talk is good to, but it's more of a how-to book. It doesn't really give reasons. I don't really know exactly how to say what I mean here. LYC just "spoke to me" more.

Ok, I hth the poster who wanted to know
