Fast Food Nation

Has anyone read this?

I'm well into the book now, and it's a facinating, disturbing read.

Predominantly, it's about the fast food industry, but it ties in with cultural trends, the production of ALL food that we eat, how the food industry lobbyists have been successful in blocking government intervention to protect our food, how our children are being sold out on many levels, and it even covers some of the dark side of hollywood and Disney.

I'm finding it hard to eat ANYTHING right now. But McDonald's? Never again.

I read it a few years ago. Let's just say that I'm now a vegetarian!

Also, I pretty much stick with organic eggs and dairy.

Don't Eat This Book is an illuminating read. If you can, rent (or buy, even!) SuperSize Me. Check out the website as well.

This was a very disturbing and eye opening book for me. I just read it recently as well. It didn't stop me from eating fast food, but I do feel even guiltier about it : and we are eating it less.

What it did do was turn me off meat. I am not a total vegetarian, I still eat fish and seafood though. But just the conditions at those meat packing plants, the way the animals are treated, and the scary health stuff was enough to make me swear off burgers. Blech.

What happend to that man who kept getting hurt and still stayed loyal to his job was just heartbreaking. ANd just the thought of those animals being hacked open and apart every second just makes me want to puke.

I actually at a peice of pepperoni pizza after reading it and just felt sick. I haven't had any meat since then except fish. I don't really know why I made the fish exception, it just doesn't feel as bad to me. Fish is in general a healthier food to eat.

I've been meaning to read this book and watch Supersize me. I also wanted to read the World is Flat. It's supposed to go to detail about technology

Very interested in reading it.

I read it about three years ago and immediately stopped going to fast food restaurants. Except In & Out (when I'm out of town; they don't have them here), which FFN gives a thumbs up.

And then I watch Corporation, and I had to switch to organic milk. Nothing like puss-dripping, infected, swollen cow udders to make you swear off RBST milk for life...

While I liked Super Size Me, it failed to gross me out as much as expected. But maybe that's because FFN had already ruined me...

I read it when it came out but I just pulled it off the shelf for a re-read.

I also second the rec for Don't Eat This Book; it's excellent summer reading, very informative but written with a lighter touch than FFN.

My husband just read this book last month, and I read excerpts from it. It's really interesting and frustrating. My interpretation was that the US is really at the end of its height of power. And while the government is busy bickering over silly issues that are none of thier business, like gay marriage, they're ignoring the creation of policies that we need to make NOW to be competetive in the global market in about 15 years.

I just bought this book for $1 at the library. I did see SupersizeMe which turned me off FF. I want to read this book but it just seems so overwhelming to me, I think I may give it a chance this week.

What is the Corporation? Is this a DVD I can rent from netflix?

I have read about half of fast food nation earlier this year. (More recently, I have been reading pregnancy books!) I did see Super Size Me and thought it was great. I heard there is a TV show now hosted by Morgan Spurlock with the same theme of doing something for 30 days.

The book was very insightful. It was interesting to see how far-reaching food decisions are. It's not just an instant gratification thing for taste with no harm done to anyone. Knowing that my choice to not eat animals or fast food impacts things (for ex., shows my acceptance of the minumum wage or harmful slaughter of animals) is what keeps me away from such places/things.

Plus, I like that he wrote about the origins of FF and the connections to mass consumerism and Disney. It reaffirmed my resolve to avoid Disney. About five or six years ago I read "Diet for a New World/America" (frgot shich one) by Mike Robbins, which was also helped me be a better decision maker.

I read this last year, and yes, it changed my eating and spending habits too.

I now avoid fast food, and try to buy from independent, non-franchise businesses. Yes, the treatment of animals was upsetting, but I found the treatment of people in the book very disturbing. I just don't want to give my money to companies that show such a total disregard for anything besides the almight buck. Food is the most basic consumer product there is. I wish that as a culture we had more respect for what that means and how our food reflects our most basic values.

Sure, the food is cheap, but at what cost? That's what I kept saying to myself after I read this book.
