Anyone see the previews? I caught one on one of the movie channels. I have to say I'm VERY disappointed in the voice that Johnny Depp uses in the movie. :

He does sound a bit girly...I too am disappointed...have to see "Pirates of the Caribbean" to get it out of your head

Thought the voice was slightly creepy. Maybe, it changes in another scene? My ds just started reading Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. He can't put it down.

I just thought he sounded flat out stupid. To the point that it might spoil the movie for me. I just don't know what Tim Burton was thinking with this?

I haven't seen a preview yet but I've seen posters around. It looks like a signature Burton film, velvet and swirls . I don't think Johnny looks that great though, something just seems off and I can't place it. Odd thing though, I've been seeing promotional items around [like colouring books etc] and there is NO mention of Tim Burton ... I wonder why that is. They seem to be downplaying his involvement in the more mainstream promotions. interesting

I watched the preview on HBO and the voice was a little creepy. I still can't wait to see the movie though. It's definitly not my sexy Johnny Depp though

I loved the original movie (and the books when I was younger), and I just keep thinking they are gonna totally mess this on up. The previews just don't look that great to me at all.

I'm worried, although I don't remember the book.

I do love Gene Wilder though, so... hmm... dh really wants to see it thought, so I might actually get to go to the movies. Wish Orlando Bloom was in it though, I never get to see his movies.

I love the book so, so much!

I have always hated the original movie, it's not much like the book.

The new movie looks pretty, in a way (unlike Johnny Depp, who sounds and looks creepy, and unaccountably like Carol Channing here! Eek! And he’s usually great, and so lovely!), but, again, I’m worried that it’ll wander far from the book.

I’m not usually a page-to-screen purist, but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was worth fidelity.

alsoSarah (thinking that Hugh Laurie would’ve made a better Wonka)

Oh, me too! The original movie betrayed the book for me and I was really disappointed.

I haven't rented the original for DS; I'm hoping that movie just dies now that there's a new version. Tim Burton has said over and over that this version will not stray far from the text and that it will house the darker aspects of the book. I sure hope so! I love that Roald Dahl never wrote down to kids.

DS has had this circled on his calandar for a couple of months now and can't wait until Friday.

Yea I think he looks odd too. It's in the mouth area mostly for me I think, and his voice. I wish he could have been less made up for the movie.
Ds said he saw a bit on the news where they said that they tried to get as far from Gene Wilder/the original movie as possible with this new one because they (movie makers, Depp) didn't want a remake they wanted a new telling of the same story.

Carol Channing
OMGs that is exactly what he sounds like!

And I love Tim Burton, but I still don't like the voice he chose for Wonka. I loved the book too. They also gave Wonka a very odd complexion. I haven't read the book in many years so I doubt I'll really remember how true to it the movie is. And really, how true to the movie are they when they decide to make Mike TV addicted to video games?

I also don't remember the book having a part where Wonka gets a hair a hair cut and finds a grey hair and that makes him decide to do the golden ticket thing. But maybe I just don't remember that part?

I have never read the book and maybe that's why I have always LOVED the original movie. Actually, it's the first DVD I ever bought. I've never been a fan or remakes and this one appears to be no exception. I found the original to be quaint and charming. This new one seems too cartoonish or something. Maybe I should read the book.

That's what they're positing??

Weird.

That definitely wasn't in the book....

Thanks, Arduinna, I'm so glad to find that I'm not crazy.... at least not about the whole Carol Channing thing!

I'm excited. Hope they lick some wall paper... I hope the movie doesn't freak 3 yo ds out, because I have to take him if I want to see it in the theater. On XM kids radio they've been playing the song from the old movie... something imagination???? By maroon 5, I really like it.
What do you get when your kid is a _ brat, spoiled and rotten like a siamese cat? are they going to play that??? lIke i said.. I'm excited.

I wondered what Tim Burton was up to these days...then I saw the promo for the film and I said, "Oh, that's what he's been doing" didn't even see his credit, just 'knew' it was him.
don't know about this one..but and I do love Tim Burton with Johnny Depp. I was crazy for Ed Wood.
As far as actor/director goes...they are up there with Scorsese/DeNiro I

I wonder how many parents will take their little kids to the movie, not realizing that the book and quite possibly this movie will be DARK. Not that Willy Wonka wasn't a dark movie, but this one will be ODD.

I can't wait to see it. I don't care if Johnny Depp sounds like Carol Channing - I'd still do him!

ITA!
And of course he is playing Wonka weird - this is a guy who's been holed up in a candy factory surrounded by oompa loompas for several years. Eccentric would be an understatement.

I love his obvious loathing for most of the kids seen in the previews.
We just read the book, and I noticed a lot of differences. This is one case where I actually like them both equally or even the movie a little more. Of course, in the book, WW doesn't seem quite so annoyed by the kids. And the oompaloompas are only 12 inches high! lol...

well, we'll see what happens. Something tells me HelloKitty won't be going to see it - are you reading this thread Kitty?

Tracy, he has also been working on Corpse Bride which is coming out in Sept, and I'm definately going to see it. Depp is in it too.
