How much would you actually spend on sposies? - Page 3

Oh yeah, we had to supersize our garbage can for an extra fifteen bucks a month for sposies for two kids in diapers. Totally ridiculous, I could have hired a maid for all of the extra money spent on sposies.

Hey! A thread in diapering I can post on

We are just diapering on in sposies now. We spend less than 25 a month on diapers and I use cloth wipes.

When we had 2 in dipes (we did for 15 months) it was about 50.

I change Bryce as often as he needs. He is dry most of the day. Poops once every morning.

Tracy was the poopin-est kid...3 or 4 times a day MINIMUM!

So, right now we aren't doing all that bad.

We didn't use training pants. Tracy potty trained in rugular underwear. Didn't buy fancy creams for rashes. Maybe extra trashbags but only about one extra a week.

It was very expensive with 2 at a time but with one it really isn't bad.

We've been in sposies for the past month and I can't believe the money I'm throwing down the drain. About $12-15/wk. barf

When we were using sposies, we bought Pampers Swaddlers and Huggies Supreme, and we changed every 2-4 hours. These are two of the most expensive brands out there, but by the time I used all my coupons, they were as cheap as the Wal-Mart brand. (Trust me, I compared.) We were spending $8 per week on diapers and $4 per week on disposable wipes. So $12 + $1 tax + $2 gas (it was 30 miles round-trip in a car that gets 30 miles per gallon) = $15 per week total. That's about $750 per year. The big question is when would DD have PL'ed? If she did at 2, we would have spent $1500 total; at 3, $2250; at 4, $3000. For one child.

As for diaper cream, my DD never had a rash in sposies, and I got two big tubes at my baby shower, so no money there. However, we did have to buy disposable liners for our Diaper Dekor Plus diaper pail. That was probably $5 a month, so another $60 per year.

So, b/c we plan to use DD's diapers on the next child, and then they still might have some resale value, we'll come out WAY ahead.

I have been buying an economy pack at $42 plus a mega pack at $18 every month, sometimes I need another mega pack to make it through to the end of the month.
I just spent $73.48CAD (including the delivery charges) and this is what I got...
1 large ME Sandy
1 Sandy doubler
1 large ME airflow
5 premium pf's off the TP
6 flats
1 large Bummis cosmic froggy wisper wrap (to lay the flats in)

I spent just over what I was going to spend on sposies this month for 12 diapers and 2 covers. Next month I am going to spend about $93CAD and buy half a dozen Sandy's and 2 more airflows, plus $33CAD for another 6 flats and a bummis cover. That will give me more than enough diapers to diaper ds over the next year+ until he potty learns. I wish I would have started cd'ing this way, I could have saved a bundle. I love cuttie diapers too, but there are so many other places to put that money. I have become very thrifty over the last couple of months.

Ds doesn't get rashes in either cd's or sposies so I have the same tube of cream I bought well over a year ago. The diaper pail cost $5CAD. I consider diapers another load of cloths to wash and with 5 people in our family another 3 loads really doesn't make much of a dent. Plus we are on a fixed water bill right now so we pay a flat rate fee for water. With flats and pf's it's only 1 dryer cycle too.

You know that in the first 3 months alone you can pretty much have paid for an entire CDing system????

Because baby goes thru so many diapers as a newborn it's an avg of $350 for the first 3 mo alone!!!!!

Shoot you can get a huge stash of nice CD's for that!!!!

Yes, many get diapers as gifts, but what about returning them for $$??? Or store credit and get that carseat you were needing anyway??

Selling diapers online is not unheard of either!

Even TWO packs of disposables , a mere $30-$40, can buy you a couple covers and some Terry Flats and you could be CDing your little angel right NOW!!!

Ditto. This was about what my figure was too. Not for brand name diapers, this was Dri Bottoms from Walmart, but I was happy with them. I don't think I'd shop at Walmart nowadays though. I'm still saving money on cloth.

This is so true. I remember with my first baby thinking what a waste it was. They poop every hour and the diaper is perfectly dry sometimes. Or they'll have a dime size of poop, you'll change them, and then not 5 minutes later they do it again:LOL

Okay. I did my figures the other night. Cause I'm still trying to explain how cloth will be cheaper for us. Well I figured it out to be $1,516.50 for newborn to 2yr 9 months. I had dd in sposies, so I just went by what I bought and how I bought them with her. I used Pampers, sometimes coupons sometimes not, sometimes sales, usually not. Come on, when you need them, you need them.
These are my totals, mind you, I went on the low end of usage, just for the sake of being nice to DP and not knowing when baby will sleep all night:
0-3 months~ 10 dipes a day, $10 pack of 50 dipes=18 packs-$180
3-9 months~ 7 dipes a day, $10 pack of 42 dipes=30 packs-$300
9months-2 1/2~5 dipes a day, $10 pack of 36 dipes=90 packs-$900
Plus: 3 months of Potty Learning: 3 dipes a day, $13 pack of 26 dipes=10.5 packs-$136.50

Total:$1,516.50

I right now have my newborn/small stash almost done, bought new and used and spent $175 so far. Even if I spent $250 per size S-L, its still only half! And I didn't add wipes or anything cause the TTO and wool wash and stuff like that kinda cancel it out.

i bought the babies r us brand. i paid $8-10 for 84 diapers. the money argument would not have worked with me because i have definitely spent more on cloth! :LOL

On my third baby, I am going to spend around $200 from birth-potty training. I had to buy new newborn/small prefolds and covers, and I will have to replace 4 medium covers and most of the premium prefolds. So I factored that into what I will spend on this baby. That price is not including washing - which will cost me about $.90 a week for three loads (we use sensiclean), 46.80 a year, and 140.40 for three years. (assuming potty learning takes that long.) So, for less than $400 I can cloth diaper baby #3 for 3 years.

For disposables,
I would go through an average of 9 diapers a day for three years. (newborns and young breastfed babies obviously go through more than that a day, My special needs three year old goes through 6-8) A jumbo pack of target brand disposables does not last me a week - even with my three year old. So let's assume 1.5 packages a week at @11.00 per week. I need more than one pack of wipes a week - so again target brand wipes about 3.50 a week. My kids skin doesn't like disposables, so factor in diaper cream at 4.00 every 6 months (this is really conservative considering how many different creams I tried with my son) This means that disposable diapering cost me about $15 a week for three years =====$2340 for one kid! That is a lot of money!

Whoo hoo, I am going to save a lot of money.

we sposied for almost three months. I did some rough calculations and I have officially broken even on my cd's! DD is just a year old. So if we continue on this path we will have more than saved by the time she potty learns, and I can reuse for future babes.

I payed about 18 to 20 cents per diaper, this was with coupons and on sale at target, box of pampers $26 for about 140ish.

I am still on my first big jug of detergent too.

Now I should go celebrate my thriftiness by buying some fantastic fluff!

We spend about $50 a month on sposies and did not have to add any garbage can space since we just clamped down on using too much packaged food and recycle literally everything we can. So, our garbage can usage is the same as before dd. I estimate our water usage would double if we were using cloth dipes meaning our water bill would increase by at least $50 if not more per month. So, it was apple and oranges for us as far as which was using more resources. Since dh did some research and found out that landfill space if overflowing with recyclables and not so much by sposies and he cannot stomach the idea of dirty dipes sitting around waiting to be washed, we went with sposies.

I buy pampers or huggies, always with coupons at target.

Water is VERY expensive in Seattle. Our water bill is at least $100 every two months and garbage adds another $35 per month and we do not even water our yard and we try to conserve water in the house.

That is my story.

both my kids are ine sposies, but I am seriously thinking of switching to cd's, especially for my 15 m old ds, who already says "done" after he poops.

I change both of them about 10 times a day, which makes 20 diapers a day (yikes!). So, that would be 140 diapers a week. We buy Pampers Cruisers and Swaddlers (cheaper sposies give my kids horrible rashes) that cost us about $30.00 for 80 diapers. So that means we spend about 53.00 a week! Holy Cow - I had never done the math...So, we are spending $2700 in ONE year. We mst be

I just wanted to add, I live down the street from a landfill here in MI. And there is constantly semi trucks coming down the road with stinky trash or whatever coming any where from here to Canada..Seriously! If I can atleast do my share to cut it down one person at a time, I am VERY seriously happy to!! :LOL

Veggiemom :

Your calculations sound more accurate than a lot of moms I talk to. 10 changes a day is much more realistic than 5!!!

We went thru 20 changes until about 2 mo, then like 18 changes a day till 4 mo then about 12 changes until 12 mo it was 10/day changes for a long time. Changed to only 8 changes for the last few months till ds was potty training, now it's 5 changes/day at the most, 2 changes on a good day. This would be the same no matter what diapers we used. All my kids HATED being wet, I was the same way as a baby. Deficating on yourself is a terrible feeling, and having to sit in it, even worse! I changed my kids right away, and at 12 mo and up ds was telling me as soon as he was wet, or would bring me a clean diaper to change him into.

Also your water usage may not increase much at all by washing CD's. You're probably doing so much laundry with poopy blowouts that you dont' realize how much water you're using.

1 child who is potty training and flushes the toilet 5 times a day is the equivalent to a load of diapers. Now you won't be doing a load every day, only every 2-3 days or more. I figured out how to do laundry every 5-7 days with diapers when I had to!!!! Sure I did 2 big loads at once, but hey if that's what ya gotta do!

Plus water is pretty cheap compared to gas driving to the store and back if you used disposables!

Figure out how to use cloth wipes with plain water too, and it will further cut your costs, make baby's bottoms happier, and save the rainforests!

I am curious, what are your water bills like? We paid $175 for two months the most recent bill. That is pretty high but we are filling dd's little pool a couple of times a week and we occasionally water the yard. It is always higher for us in summer. So, if we changed to cds our water bill would at least double (sewer charges are twice that of incoming water) and that is way more than what I spend going to target once a month and buying two big boxes of dipes and some wipes.

Not trying to argue but to understand. Maybe water is just a lot cheaper elsewhere.

I seriously doubt your water usage would double. And I doubt even more seriously that your bill would double even if actually used twice as much. Most places charge a flat fee for water service and then charge you per gallon. Our water ranged between $120-150 per quarter pre kid. It's ranged about $150-180 post kids. Also do you have any idea how much water it takes to make paper. I don't care per se what you choice is, but I think your assumptions are incorrect.

We don't see our water bill - it comes out of our HOA.

Also keep in mind that just shy of 50% of kids are potty trained/learned by age three nowadays (the majority of them in single use diapers). Most people I know don't start in earnest with teaching their kids the potty until three or so, and plenty use them till four or five. Some longer at night.

We used cloth from six months with ds #1, he used the potty pretty reliably from about 26 months. Ds #2 we did late-start EC, and he has been potty independent since about 20 months.

Furthermore, I have read that using throwaway diapers doubles the household waste output of the average family with a baby.

That has to come into play in cost somewhere, whether calculating water, single use dipes package price, disposal, etc.
