Anyone know this scifi book?

Hi
I read this book about 10 years ago and I loved it but I can't remember the title or author. It was about a woman who is on a planet studying the behavior of some kind of aquatic mammal-type animal. She becomes involved somehow with a race of beings that I think were kind of cat-like in appearance. (I may be confusing this detail with another book). She gets caught up in this race's political situation. I can't remember much more, but I think the ending left things open for another book- possibly it was the beginning of a series. I also am pretty sure the author was a woman, because I was obsessed with female scifi and fantasy writers at the time. I am also almost positive that the author is NOT CJ Cherreah (or however you spell it!). Anyone have any ideas? Come on all you scifi fans out there, help me out, this has been driving me crazy for years!

It sounds a little like the Freedom Landing series, from Anne McCaffrey?

I'm thinking the second book in the Dark Materials trilogy.

OK-
It's not part of the Dark Materials series- those were awsome btw and I will check into the Ann McCaffery book, but I don't think that was it either. Thanks for your responses, and I hope more people post suggestions

Something by Ursula le Guin??

Could it be A Door into Ocean by Joan Slonczewski? Don't remember any cat-like beings, but it's a pretty neat book about an ocean-dwelling matriarchy with Gandhi-ish principles, the researcher does get involved in the political situation, and there is a sequel

I just checked into A Door in the Ocean and it sounds great and I am going to read it. Unfortunately it's not the book I am looking for. It is also not the Anne McCaffery book either. Maybe I'll never find it and this will drive me crazy forever!! Please keep those sugestions coming!!

the sparrow and/or children of god by mary doria russell? group of earthlings go to another planet, find life (sort of mammal-like beings), and get caught up in the political and social situation.

I have no idea what the book might bem but you might want to try Booksleuth at AbeBooks . It's a forum designed specifically to help people identify forgotten books/authors. It's great! I found out the titles of three books that I had forgotten, and I didn't have much detail to go on. People are quick to respond, too.

Good luck!

Yes, and the discussion forums at www.chicklit.com have a thread entitled, "Help me with the title of this book." There are some very SF-savvy women there.

This was my first thought...but there was nothing aquatic in those.

Great Books!

Is there any possibility this was a Star Trek novel? I'm not sure about the cat-like creatures (although there's another one with those), but there's definitely one with people studying aquatic creatures on another planet, and then the people get involved in political turmoil on that planet. _Deep Domain_ was the title.

How about Change by Ann Maxwell? They were big sorta telepathic cats. But I don't remember any political stuff on the cats side more on the human side.
