book recommendations for young boy

So I have a 5.5 year old who is starting to read, but has little interest in anything basic enough that he can read on his own. I'm looking for great books I can read *to* him, especially at bedtime. Quality stuff that will capture his attention and imagination. But if I go and just browse at the library with him, I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start! What books would you try with a kid who enjoys the following:

-- _Charlie and the Chocolate Factory_ by Roald Dahl. He has had us read this to him three times already; I think we've had enough for now. We've read some of Roald Dahl's other kid-friendly books, too. Strange and sometimes a tad dark, but always interesting.

-- Currently reading _Harry Potter_ (first book). It's a little complex for him, and so I do a little explaining and reviewing of who's who and what's going on before we transition to another chapter. But I would much rather that a book be a little too complex for him, requiring some adult explanation/interactive reading than something accessible but not captivating. He is really enjoying this book and is always bitter when I have to call it quits for the night.

-- Loves animals and science. We eat up books on geology/plate techtonics, evolution, dinosaurs, snakes -- that sort of thing. Best if well illustrated *and* the text goes beyond the basics with some fairly in-depth stuff. He wants detailed explanations of how things work!

-- Loves stuff about cars and buildings if it's detailed and explains how things work. Great illustrations, please.

-- He's fine with the facts of nature (predators and prey, that sort of thing), but generally doesn't like "scary" made-up stuff. Will be interesting to see if parts of Harry Potter bug him.

-- Loves Dr. Seuss, but we've done it to death and need to move on.

Thanks in advance for any advice y'all have!

Has your son seen "The Way Things Work." I can't remember the author, but the way you describe your son it would be perfect for him,

Two of my favs for reading aloud are The Wizard Oz (the chapters are short and very descriptive) and Paddington Bear (Paddington is so silly it is fun to laugh at him).

Ronald Dahl is a big hit here, and we also like E. B. White. (Charlotte's Web etc.) I think the writers are on about the same level, White's work isn't so ... odd.

My kids like Harry Potter, too, and are very excited about the new book! Have you read the books yourself first, so that you know what is coming? Each book is darker than the one before it.

My kids like the Eyewitness series of non-fiction. They have books on just about everything -- lots of pictures and very interesting text. The text goes beyond the basics, but has in broken up into little blocks so that it isn't threatening.

There is another nice series with titles like "Who Were the Vikings?" "Who Built the Pyramids?" etc. and my kids like these. Very fun books to read together.

What about Farmer Boy, from the Little House series? We read almost all of those w/ our DS, but Farmer Boy was definitely his favorite

What about the Magic Tree House series? They are adventure based and I have them to read to my son when he's ready.

My Father's Dragon or The Dragons of Blueland by Ruth Stiles Gannett

What about the Chronicles of Narnia?

: for good ideas

My 4.5 yo DS really enjoyed Charolette's Web and is currently enjoying The Secret Garden. Maybe your DS would also enjoy James and the Giant Peach?

Oh, this I have a great answer for: a friend let me in on the website www.guysread.com.

It has a section with book reccomendations for each age group, grouped by young guys, middle guys and older guys, but I like to pull from a few categories.

My DS really loves The Adventures Of Sparrowboy and I had never heard of it before the site. I'm still reading to him, though.

HTH,
Nicole.
