Mother Asked Not to Breastfeed - Page 2

Eww. We may be moving to Columbus, Ohio in a few months. I will have to go to both places and NIP. When baby #2 is born, I will have to tandem NIP!!

Yikes, there are some obnoxious people on there. I'm having serious doubts about the woman whose heart attack was caused by being attacked for ff'ing. Someone in a grocery store in the midwest in 78 was militantly pushing breastfeeding? Uh huh. Where were all these wild-eyed bf'ing zealots when my mom was told that it was silly to bf because it didn't matter, that same year (she never even tried). And I have to wonder why someone that sick, 1 month pp after having been on 6 months bedrest, was walking around a grocery store. Not saying it's impossible, but I would think she'd still have to be taking it easy... the whole story just didn't seem to add up, yanno?

I was thinking the same thing, paquerette - maybe not about her story in particular, but all these, "I was accosted by breastfeeding nazis" stories in general. I hear this all the time, but have I ever seen it happen? No. Have I ever talked to a bf advocate who would ever do such a thing? No. OTOH, I've heard lots of people say it's gross to bf, bf isn't important, bf should be done in private, etc. Furthermore, America is a FF nation and we all know it, so where the hell are these bf nazis coming from? It's ridiculous. While I do believe the occasional woman has had some maniac attack her out of the blue, I am of the opinion that most of those stories are either complete fabrications or gross exaggerations.

ERSsmom, I haven't NIPed at Wyandot Lake, but I have NIPed all over Columbus OH with nary a problem. Ditto for my friends who live there. The new breastfeeding discrimination law in Ohio has many businesses aware of the protected status of BF as well.

Good luck with your move.

Thanks. That is reassuring. If I do run into problems, I will just use it as an opportunity to educate. The fact that the law was just recently passed may be beneficial to those who are nursing now because the law will be fresh on everyone's mind. Currently, I live in Florida and I carry around a copy of the breastfeeding laws in my diaper bag. I have never had to pull them out, but once I get to Ohio, I will do the same .

I clicked the link to respond but got an error message. Hopefully Annette Marie crashed their server.

I read that whole thread and thought it was very sad. Those older ladies who didn't breastfeed sure did try to cover up their ignorance with mock-politeness. *sigh*

I was feeling sad about the serious lack of breastfeeding mothers yesterday. I went into Baby Burlington and saw so many brand new babes with bottles stuck in their mouths. I went to dinner and saw two more babes. I thought maybe one was a BF'd baby because at first I didn't see any bottles. But then the mom whipped one out and *sigh* I was saddened again. Not that I judge other mothers for their choices, but to me it seems like my sister and I are the only ones breastfeeding in this town.

I know formula has its place. I just wish more women would research before automatically "choosing" formula. IMHO, "choosing" formula over breastfeeding is a rather uneducated choice.

My mother, who is a ped nurse, said she was trying to encourage a new mother to breastfeed, and the woman said she would lose her WIC... what a reason to formula feed.

Now I have heard it all. WIC denying you because you breastfeed? That is crazy and that mamma was sadly misinformed.

I think it's a horribly sad state of the country that so many people are so misinformed, the people at the amusement park, and especially the mothers themselves

BTW... could you contact La Leche League about the new Ohio law? http://www.lalecheleague.org/Law/summary.html#OH

On their page it says
Quote:
OHIO
Ohio has no legislation pertaining to breastfeeding.
PS- so glad to see that, we'll be visiting Ohio sometime soon and I was annoyed when I saw there was no law when I was browsing around the LLL summary page the other day while I was working on my WBW press release... but it sounds like that's not true!
