My Baby's Here- but in the NICU

Jessica Larita was born on July 13th at 6:52 pm and pretty much immediately whisked away to the NICU because of possible meconium inhalation. She also has a cleft palate (behind the gums, not visible externally) and can't breastfeed or use a regular bottle. So she needs to learn how to feed from the special nipple - they want her taking 45 cc's every 3 hrs- until she can be released. So far she has done that amount once, so we're making progress. I'm pumping and pumping and trying to keep up with her, unfortunately the NICU has standards of care and there was no choice but to supplement with formula. Though her last bottle was 100% breastmilk
So, please keep her in your thoughts, we want her home soon!

I'm sorry your baby is in the NICU. I know how dissapointing it is to not be able to bring your baby home. Are you able to hold her for her feedings? My son was in the NICU and PCICU for about 4 weeks. He wasn't able to suck and had an NG tube. The hospital staff was very supportive about me pumping my milk but they were adding formula to it for "extra calories". Eventually I could hold him and nurse but they were continuing to force formula down the NG tube even after nursing which would make him spit up! Too much volume

I wish you the best and hope she is home soon!

I can't imagine how hard that must have been for you. Well, I can *almost* imagine.
Yes, we can hold her and feed her ourselves, they even let us go in the "family room", a little room with a couch and a couple gliders and a pump, and they leave us alone with her in there and let us feed and spend time with her.
Some nurses are better than others about the breastmilk- it frustrates me a lot when I leave bottles of EBM in the fridge and come back the next morning to find them unused , but it's hard to keep up with her right now anyways. I definitely hear you about the large amounts down the ng tube- she spit up this morning after taking 30 with the bottle and then having 20 down the tube- it's better when they use the pump but when they use gravity it's just too fast for her.

anyways, thanks for the support everyone, it looks like it's going to be at least a few more days, she needs to be much, much more alert and awake than she is at this point. one day at a time....

Lily, congratulations on your little girl, and I am so sorry you haven't been able to bring her home yet. This must be such a stressful time for you.
Are you getting good help with pumping and establishing your milk supply? I don't know if it would be helpful now or maybe in the future when Jessica is stronger, but I know that La Leche League has a pamphlet or book on nursing with cleft lips and cleft palates, and if you contact a Leader they should be able to put you in touch with someone who is expert on this issue.
Best wishes to you and your family -

Congratulations Lily, and welcome to Jessica!! So sorry to hear about the complications, although it sounds like things are improving, and kudos to you for your dedication to bfing -- I know it has to be frustrating. I hope she is able to be home with you in a few days. Best wishes to you and your family.

I am sorry that your little girl is still in the NICU. One of my babies (that I havent even announced the arrival of) was also ng tube fed in the NICU (both were in the NICU). She also had a hard time with gravity causing the milk to come too fast, we just lowered the tube - the closer to the ground, the slower the flow.

We also had the spitting up after nursing/feeding. We would nurse and the doc would want the babies to also receive supplements (breastmilk) via bottle (baby B) and ng tube (baby B). Both would spit up if they recieved too much The NICU staff was so happy to see me leave. I was kind of a pain in the tushy :LOL

Congratulations on the birth of baby Jessica! I'll be keeping you, her and your family in my thoughts, hoping that soon your baby will be home - if she isn't already! I'm sorry you can't breastfeed as planned too. Many years ago, my brother was born with a cleft lip and palate, and though feeding was difficult in the beginning (bottled) he eventually got the hang of it...to this day I think of him and how sweet he was when I smell Similac.
