Do you subscribe to any homeschool magazines?

Thread Starter
I just saw The Old Schoolhouse magazine at B&N yesterday. I have seen ads for it around, but wanted to actually see one in real life, before commiting to subscribe!

For me, personally, it was too fundie and off-the-wall for my taste. Our approach to parenting and hs has no religious base to it. My dh is a Catholic, but sees no connection between hs and his church. I am a devout Atheist.

I haven't looked into any other hs magazines. Can anyone suggest any that are more along the lines of what MDC proposes as kind and loving and AP-friendly?

I don't really feel the need to have a hs magazine, but it might be interesting to have some as a "hard copy" resource beyond MDC, the Internet and the library!

Well, I never really considered if this was "AP friendly" but "Home Education Magazine" is the one I get. It's not religious. The website is www.homeedmag.com

I get HEM as well. I was really annoyed with the military recruiting ad taking up the whole inside back cover in the issue before last, though. (The ad is gone this time).

We get The Old Schoolhouse. We are Christian and use a wide variety of curriculum/books/supplies, so it fits our needs. I have enjoyed it, I take and leave what I want from it.

We subscribe to the old school house and will be geting a subscription to Practical homeschooling. Both of those have learning ideas (TOS is practicaly a unit study with some other things thrown in) The library has HEM and it is a fun read but doesn't have anything I would consider paynig for espcially since I don't have to . more of a pep talk. intresting though and completely non-religous.

Considering TOS is pushing The Pearls right on their home page, I would absolutely not order from it. Which is really a shame, because I saw a copy and was interested, before I realized they were advocating child abuse. :

I would love to find a homeschooling magazine that doesn't advocate beating babies with plastic rods.

I've always liked Home Education Magazine.

I subscribe to HEM also and really like the articles.
I always find great ideas and book recommendations in every issue.

Add my vote for Home Education Mag, although I read mine from the library instead of subscribing. (I'm always tempted to subscribe, but I'm trying to cut down on buying things I don't really need. )

Does anyone know what happened to Life Learning? I used to buy it occasionally at a book store, but they don't have it anymore. They aren't carrying Home Education Mag anymore either : so that doesn't mean that it's out of print. But I wonder... Life Learning is (was?) an unschooling magazine. I found some things to radical for me, but I enjoyed it over all.

Adding a couple of smilies for 3 y.o. ds:

I like Home Ed mag, but I don't love it. It doesn't stir my passions, you know. It's kind of like reading my car's Owner's Manual - useful and occasionally interesting, but not compelling.

I'd love a magazine that is 1) secular or very inclusive with regards to religions and belief systems, 2) politically concerned with issues relating to home learning and family life but generally non-partisan, 3) developed with professional production values and very compelling writing and 4) less concerned with the declarations relating to home learning than with getting on with it (that is, less of the "we're here, we're homeschoolers, get used to it" and more "here's some cool stuff you can do with sodium").

As a secular classical-ed family with a globally inclusive worldview, things can get pretty lonely amongst the very religious and/or active unschooling communities. I wish also wish there was a secular or inclusive classical-ed mag, but maybe there aren't enough of us to sustain more than a newsletter! (Hey, now there's an idea....hmmm....)

Life Learning is here: http://www.lifelearningmagazine.com/ I got a sample issue once -- I really liked the concept of the magazine, but the issue was so poorly edited that it really turned me off. Maybe things have changed since then.

Just an fyi for anyone who doesn't know, "Practical Homeschooling" is a christian publication.

As an unchurching unschooler, here's my input:

Life Learning Magazine (link in above post) is available to download as PDF. I like this magazine, it does have a pro-unschooling feel to it, but it is not exclusively for unschoolers.

http://www.livefreelearnfree.com/ is stories of, by and for unschoolers. It's barely a year old and it's off to a great start. I read someone else's issues when they're done, so as to save $ and trees

Hands down though, HEM is my favorite
