Board Game Suggestions?

My daughter is five and has sort of moved beyond the chutes and ladders, hi-ho cheerio, candyland, boggle jr. type of games. We mostly have some noncompetitive games from the company in Canada (KWIM? Can't remember the name right now), because they're cool and we really needed them last year, but they're also over awfully fast, at least the ones we've got currently (Princess, Harvest Time). I think she's old enough to deal with not winning, we play go fish a lot and haven't had the tears explosion of last year. She can read, so it opens a few more doors regarding the games, but I'm not sure about strategy aspect yet?

Does anyone have any suggestions? I loved Monopoly as a 8-year old, but I'm not quite sure she'd get it yet (strategy). What do your children like to play?

HABA has awesome games that you can buy from any UBB's Natural Family Boutique consultant- I think we have a few here on MDC. My kids love them!

Ravensburger
has some wonderful cooperative games where everyone wins.

There is a great book called Journey to Gameland that is all about creating a game based on a children's book that we are going to use this year.

Another great book- I got mine on ebay because it was expensive, but your library might have it as well- The Treasury of Family Games . It has directions and descriptions of every game imaginable.

I'm not a huge fan of monoploy, especially for kids, because I don't really like the message it sends, but I'm nutty that way.

What about crazy eights, Othello, or checkers? Those games are simple to learn but something you'll be able to play together forever.

I have wonderful memories of my summer babysitter teaching me to play "Kings in the Corner" and "Spoons".

Dss, 6 & 4, love to play Parcheesi with dh and me.

Ds play Mancala with each other all of the time.

Our newest board game, Totally Tut, is a fun math game that they are really getting the hang of.

Dd's current favorite game (she LOVES games) is Poppi's Pizza Topple (I think that's the name). It reminds me of the game Don't Tio the Waiter, that I played as a kid. It is a plastic chef who sits in a base and holds a pizza crust over his head. You roll the die and add the toppings to the pizza without kocking it over. It's a lot of fun, plus the pizza doubles as a plathing for her kitchen, lol!

She also likes the nursery rhyme games. We have been playing these since she was 2. We have Baa Baa Black Sheep, Old MacDonald (which is a memory game, but with music), BINGO and The Wheels on the Bus (ds has long since taken over the bus as his favorite plaything however!)

How about Monopoly Jr.? Or a trivia game? Or Twister! Okay, not exactly a board game. Clue also has a Jr. version... or just find a game store and go check out what they have. I've seen some neat-looking games based on Dr. Seuss books...

UNO, yahtzee, and mancala are our favs right now

Yes, check out the Family Pastime games (ie., The Secret Door and Princess...my kids favorite is Max )

Yahtzee and Guess Who are also popular here.

We recently got Monopoly Jr., and dd really likes it. I was even impressed at how well she caught on to the simple math involved with money.

We also play Uno, and other card games.

We are a board game (and card game) loving family here! A few games we'd recommend are:

Uno
Mancala
Trouble
Sorry
Parcheesi
Clue Jr. (the missing toy one and the missing cake one)
Monopoly Jr. (the dinosaur one and the amusement park one)
Little Bear Leapfrog
Checkers
Chinese Checkers
Old Maid
Crazy Eights
Connect Four

We also really like: Scrabble Jr., Yahtzee, Life, Break the Safe, LOTR Monopoly, Simpsons Clue, BrainQuest, and a couple of the Harry Potter board games, though those may be easier for kids a little older than 5.

Have Fun!

My kids are really into a game called Sum Swamp. It is a board game and you roll and either add or take away(subtract) to find out how many spaces you move. They use little farm animals manipulatives for it. They really enjoy it. There are some special spaces you can land on, evens/odds and stuff, but we don't do that yet. It is also able to be a game played as they get older as well, because you can change the add/subtract die for multipy/divide.

We just picked up Pictionary Junior last night

Guess who is an interesting game that takes a bit of deductive logic. My kids like it alot. Cadoo is also pretty fun. We like Sorry, Parchisi and dominoes. To start kids out on Dominoes, just let them play until one person goes out- no points - then add in points later. HTH

We *love* board games around here.

We really like the game maker Gamewright
http://www.gamewright.com/gamewright...?section=games

We have

Big Top
Bzz Out
Hss
Leaping Lizards
Go Bananas!
Hocus Focus
Wig Out
and others

You can get them for like $5 at Target (the card games) or, for the more expensive ones I got them for around $10 at the learning supply store (except for Leaping Lizards which we got on vacation for $22CAN).

Chess
Checkers
Cranium Cadoo
Apples to Apples Junior (the 7+ one)

We like a LOT of the games already mentioned before. DS was obsessed w/Harry Potter Uno for a while.

ETA: We only own Gobblet Junior but Blue Orange Games are also excellent:

The Secret Door and Max (and Guess Who) are/were favorites here as well.

Cranium makes a game for the age 5 level. We have Cranium Cadoo (age 7-up) and love it. Cards and marbles are fun too.

We love Gamewright too.

One of DD1's fave GW games is The Legend of Landlock. She also loves Frog Juice, There's a Moose in the House and Snap. She likes Max, but not by the stated rules. She makes up whole scenarios, many in Max's favour.

I'd recommend browsing Funagain's childrens games. OT, but family favourites (for which DD1 is not yet old enough) include Carcassonne, Puerto Rico, Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride and Bohnanza (DD1 helps with this one).

Thank you thank you! I'll check out our local consignment shop for some, and some I'll have to get new. My husband is from a HUGE board-game family so I'll see if they have any you suggest in storage. I really have enjoyed the Family Pasttime games, I think maybe we just need to look in a little older age range because they seem to be over very quickly, too quickly for mom and dad at least. They were great for when she was younger though, and it's so cool how many of our mainstream friends are interested in them (particularly because what 3-4-5 year old likes losing?!), and her friends always ask to play them when they come over. I would like some new games that involve some math in a fun way, and it looks like there are some great suggestions on here for that.

The funniest one my parents in law have in their game closet is one concerning mork and mindy, from the 70s...
