My girls LOVE boardgames.

Their favorites right now are:

Balloon Lagoon by Cranium
Conjecture (playdough pictionary) we modify to be a little easier
Princess and the Pea
Trouble
Checkers
Bingo
Cranium Cariboo Island (although more so when they were younger)
marbles
Jenga
Fish
memory games
Yatzee

They are always wanting new games, and we often make up new ones, or new rules for others.

They also used to like the computer versions of Monopoly Jr and Candyland. But we don't encourage them to play those ones because they have so many special effects. But once in a while it is ok.

Wow, I'll have to check some of these out!

Guess Who has been a huge hit for us. If she's into cats, there's a cute bingo game called Kitty Corners - overpriced, but then insanely popular at our house. And what about chess? Both our older girls were enjoying it to some degree by late 4 (with some goofiness, but they loved the grown-up feeling of a game of chess with a wooden board), and the younger one just turned 6 and is a pretty good strategist by now. I learned along with them!

My dd likes Jenga and Dominoes.

I recently saw an interesting magazine called Games Quarterly. It was a special edition on using games in the classroom. They had reviews of a number of games. You can view it online right now at their site.

Some games I thought were interesting sounding for the younger kids-
Sum Swamp
Fish Eat Fish
Kids of Catan
ABC OY
Spell Time
Green Alligators
The Ungame
Somebody
Dinosaurs and Things
Awesome Animals card game
Frolickin
Fablekin
Puzzlekin
Walk in the Woods

thank you all, for wonderful list of bord games!! Board games are wonderful to develop/enhance the cognitive development in any age, not to mention teaching to take turns, follow rules, being patient, etc. I started to show pieces of chess and its movements with my tot of 3 yr. old. I am planning to move on to Shogi and Go later. Shogi is the Japanese chess, but with more pieces (and you can use the ones you have taken fron your opponet), and Go is like a Japanese Othello.

more games...

We love games! I play all of these with a 8yo and 11yo:

*Carcassonne is similar to Landlock (you choose cards and lay them out into a map) with more cards and more layout options. Really beautiful cards.

*Rat-a-Tat-Cat is a very fun and addictive memory card game with a twist. We love bringing this to restaurants because it is compact and quick (although you have to be somewhere where you can rap on the table)

*Zapp Zerrapp is a Parcheesi style game with an alternative to dice. There are shakers with different amounts of steel balls in them and you have to guess how many by listening to the sound they make. Craziness ensues...

*Apples to Apples is a huge hit when you have a big group. I think the adult version is fine, just remove cards that are too obscure.

*Elfenland is another beautiful game set in the magical world of elves. You have to travel to different elfen cities using various forms of transportation. Littles may need a few rounds to understand the strategy, but they will get it. My 8yo has beat me more than a few times fair and square!

*The AMAZING Labyrinth is a great game by Ravensburger with a moveable board game that requires good spatial thinking. Kids seem to have an advantage in this game -at least when they play against me!!

*I second the recommendation for HABA- some of their big box games are good for a little bit older children- we used to play Kayanak A LOT. Actually, I should pull this out again!
