Tom Cruise should have mentioned breastfeeding...

Thread Starter
The debate about psychiatric drugs aside, what should have been pointed out by someone during the whole Tom Cruise--Brooke Shields public argument is how breastfeeding can lower the incidence and/or lessen the severity of post partum depression. Obviously, BS will never know if this would have helped her and apparently TC has no clue or he would have used a much better argument.

Anyway, every time I read something about these two and their disagreement, I want to scream "will somebody mention breastfeeding please?" Am I the only one who thinks this?

I didn't follow that particular controversy, but I have frequently had the exact same thought whenever breast cancer and prevention are being discussed on any news type show.

BS gave up breastfeeding because of her PPD. (Then she went on to be a spokesmodel for a formula company.)

So I feel like if anyone brought it up, no good could come of it because it's either ragging on her more or allowing that one should give up BFing if one is depressed.

i totally feel the same way! remember those stinky formula commercials she did w/her baby? barf. anyway, i had to go around a few weeks back collecting my ds's med records for a SSI application, and when one office lady asked why, i said very briefly, "he has a certain condition that was misdx'ed as ADHD for 7 yrs. i need the SS $ for his treatments". she asked if he took ritalin and i said "NO WAY!". so she says to me "oh, tom cruise would love you!" my reply: "i happen to think TC is an idiot. if i had a choice between meds and maybe killing my baby, it would take me 2 seconds to swallow the pill. but that's besides the point. i am actually quite low risk for PPD". so she asks why and i said (very proudly) " i am a BF mother!"

Actually I am glad that he didn't mention it. SO many people think that he is a raving lunatic these days that it would have only shed a bad light on BF.

if you search under scientology (which is Tom's "religion") and breastfeeding, you will see that l. ron hubbard didn't believe in bf. he believed in some sort of barley water concotion

In her book she writes that her daughter "had had enough of her boobs" at around 8 or 9 months. By then she had been supplementing and was already the spokesperson for the formula company.

I really hated how she said she "ferberized" her baby

I know this is a little OT here, but....this whole scenario makes me wonder how Scientologists believe birth should be? Continuing to berate people for taking psychatric meds, yet when it comes time to have a baby, do they do the ol' epidural? Anyway, I stray....
I am a total believer in freedom of religion, but here again, TC had no right, IMO, to speak as he did about BS and also to Matt Lauer.

They believe in a silent birth. Not a noise is to be made. Furthermore, they prohibit speaking any words to the newborn for the first week.

But if you are a Sea Org female, you don't have to worry about birthing because you must have an abortion as per your 1 billion year contract.

What's the reason for all the quiet during birth/afterwards? Don't wanna scare the aliens away, so they can get money out of the kid when it grows up, too?

They don't want any negative "engrams" to imprint themselves into the baby's brain, which could result in all sorts of problems down the line.

Peggy Vincent includes at least one Scientology birth in her book Babycatcher. Very interesting!

I'd rather he keep those comments to himself. I don't think it would have helped "our side" any by having him promote it.

I think they were Christian Scientists, who are pretty different from Scientologists. Anyhow, I don't have much patience for TC.
By the way, does anyone here think he might be having a long manic stretch, as part of a disorder? He's acting a lot like my old boss, who was a type of bipolar that had very long manic stretches, lasting for months. It was pretty wild to witness.

L. Rob Hubbard says that breastmilk has too many toxins in it. Things that the mother takes into her body, like cigarette smoke, drugs, etc.
