I got a new glass cooktop range and my cast iron skillet is really making a mess of it. Its leaving marks, some permanent and some that will only come off with the toxic cleaner they gave me when we bought the range.

Does anyone have a good recipe for cleaning a cooktop without harsh chemicals?

thanks!!

and I am mourning the fact I think I'll be retiring my cast iron before I totally ruin my cooktop..

My mother has a glass cooktop and we have used the Mrs. Meyers Clean day all purpose cleaner on it. It worked better than the stuff that came with it. Also you might try baking soda. I haven't tried it on the cooktop but I haven't had it scratch anything else and have even gotten rust off the counter. (dd stuck a cast iron pan next to the sink where it got wet and left it there all day.) I am sorry you are having problems, but if the baking soda or other cleaner gets it clean, maybe you can keep using your cast iron. good luck.

I've had great luck with baking soda and water. Bon Ami also works great on stains-not sure how natural it is, but it is bleach-free.

We've had some talks here about oxalic acid and I think the consensus was that an OA product like Barkeeper's Friend could be considered fairly natural/safe, since OA is also contained in foods such as swiss chard. You can use the water from boiling swiss chard for cleaning glass and metal, or you can get a can of BKF powder and use that. It's what I use on my cook top, counters, and sink when they get stained and it gets pretty much any mark off.

I use a baking soda paste on my cooktop - the abrasion really seems to take off any residue from cooking. Also, I bought a scraper - really intended for removing paint from windows - and use that first, to take off the excess gunk.

I've had the cooktop 3 years now and it still looks new.....
