Difference in fit between fitted and pockets?

So it looks like I might need to make a few fitteds to try for nighttime. I posted over in the "regular" diapering section about my DS having really messy, leaky poops with his nighttime diaper (FB bought, and Honeyboy pockets I made). It seems the overwhelming response was to use a fitted (or a prefold). The problem is I have not used one (but I do have MEOS I have not used in over a year - do they count?). How does the cut/pattern differ between a fitted and a pocket? Are fitted diapers made from a different pattern than pockets and AIOs are? What about fitted pockets? What is your favorite fitted pattern?

I don't know about the difference in cut/fit between fitteds and pockets, I use the same patterns to make pockets, AIOS and QD fitteds. My favorite patterns are: Darling pocket fitted, VB AIO, & Cuddlebuns. I thought that HoneyBoy was too big overall, I prefer a trimmer fit. HTH!

I totally agree about honeyboys being too big. I have trimmed and modified that pattern so much that it is no longer a resemblence of the original.

MEOS do count, they are a fitted. I don't think we could use one overnight though, they aren't super absorbant IME even with the insert.

I checked out your post in Diapering. I think that the general fit of a MEOS is right on target for your problem. I think they are higher rise and wide in the stride and butt compared to the leg openings, and that is what I think will help keep in poop for you. You could use the general shape of the MEOS to design your own pattern or alter one you have to match the measurements as a starting point.

There isn't that much difference in the fit between a fitted diaper and a pocket diaper made with the same pattern, and most patterns work for both. The fit does change depending on how much you stuff the pocket with, just as it changes when you start adding doublers to a fitted. The difference is in how the layers are sewn together and what materials you use.

Good luck!

My other thought is that you could try bananas, they usually firm things right up around here!

Funny that you say that -- unfortunately since blueberry season started, my son refuses to eat bananas. He only wants blueberries. Which is making the diaper mess even worse! He used to take a banana any time he could get one.

I tried a MEOS last night. It did contain everything inside the cover, a little leaked out of the leg of the diaper. I would have to try several nights, though (and probably will). I only had one cover in his current size, and now it's in the pail. And it was not as easy to clean as my pockets (but less overall mess than I have been getting lately).

I had been so confused about the fitted/pocket fit difference. I had thought the fundamental difference was whether or not there was PUL (or other leakproof fabric) attached to everything else. But maybe I will try to make some fitteds with either the Darling Diapers or the CB patterns. Maybe some from my HB pattern as well. Oh, and I have GoodnessGracious. And then see if just the different combo of fabrics/covers helps, as you suggest Kari_mom.

The HB pattern fits really well for us as pockets (although admittedly I have not tried another); my DH likes them best of all. They are a bit bulky - at least compared to disposables which is what I knew before. I am thinking the FB larges need to be put away for a while as there is waaaayyy too much room in them even though he is in the middle of the weight range and I stuff them with a premium PF and put the snaps on the smallest settings.

Thanks, to you all for your posts - I had hoped you would, as I read so many of your other posts.

The main difference IS that a fitted doesn't have a waterproof layer, but a pocket can have one. If it does, it is often referred to as a pocket AIO, if it is just absorbant layers with a removeable internal soaker pad, it is a pocket fitted.

BTW. blueberries scare me. We haven't tried them yet. :LOL
