Celebrate with me!

After 9 months of research and shopping, I finally bought my serger!

It was pretty much an impulse buy too. :LOL

I need to make some diapers, I like the look of T&T but I wanted serged soakers. These will be like the most expensive diapers ever!

I want to make more clothes for my children, it's not like I bought it just for diapers, right?

I could have mentioned that, huh? It's a Huskylock 905. One of the reasons I bought it was because it matches my Viking sewing machine. :LOL It also performed really well during my test drives, serged through 6 layers of hemp jersey like butter, barely cared about three layers of fleece. I just didn't think I would spend that much. : Can I blame my dh, he told me to buy it, I think I wore him out talking about sergers.

I do like that the dealer is about 5 minutes away, I might actually take a lesson then.

I have a Huskylock, too. I better go sharpen my blade. Can you do that? Or get a new one. I've never done that and it is 11 years old. It still goes through 3 layers of hemp fleece, but it works a little. Must be the blade.

Ooooh, congrats! If it's not too nosy... which "level" of Huskylock is it? I love my Viking sewing machine and have been drooling at the Huskylock sergers, but the saleslady said the cheapest one is barely worth buying. I'm trying to figure out how much to save up and how long it'll take me.

I have the 905, one step up from the 901. It is interesting that she said that the lowest priced model wasn't worth buying, I would be suspicious of that. I hate to be 'sold' to, part of my impulse yesterday was because the saleslady spoke to me like a person, not a wallet.

She did try to point me in the direction of the 910, which has a computerized serging 'advisor' to help you figure out settings. It might be nice, but it had more buttons to mess with and with all my helpers, too tempting.

Do you have other serger models you can try out? I went around with samples and serged on all the dealer machines I could find. Brother, Babylock, Janome, Bernina. Really, the Huskylock 905 performed well, as well or better than the other sergers I tried.

I paid $632 before tax, it was on sale. I was quoted $980 at the other dealer in town. I found a place online a while ago that quoted me around $750. Dealers can't actually offer them online, it was one of those stores where you have to call and ask. It took me a while to save up most of it too.

I threaded it from scratch this morning, it worked on the first try and wasn't hard at all. So far I've made lots of long strips of serged edges and some pouches for my boys who wanted me to make them something - literally fabric folded in half with serged edges and snaps.

Congrats! So you finally took the plunge. I can't wait to see all the cool diapers you make.

I have the sewing advisor. I use it as a reference. I paper reference would work just as well. It's not like it feels my fabric or anything. It just plugs through these pathways depending on what my answer is.

I'd go for the stitches you need. Do most of the machines within a particular brand's line thread the same way, etc? (I don't know - I have not looked in so long.)

I remember way back talking to the lady (she was a friend) that I bought mine from - they did have one model that had a lot of problems and they changed it the following year. So I personally would not buy a brand new model as soon as it was available b/c of my experience with that. But if the cheapest one has been made for a number of years without major changes to it's functionality, there must be a reason they keep it, right?
