Leah had the baby in the toilet after feeling the urge to use the restroom.
When I was in labor with my first I really, really thought I had to have a bowel movement. Sure enough I was pushing, but didn't even know it.

said she and her husband went to the hospital because she was past her due date, bleeding and having contractions less than two minutes apart.
wow! I can't imagine a hospital sending someone home at this stage of labor. I wonder what she was dilated to?

Greetings,
Does not surprise me one bit... sounds about right for a hospital!

The hospital nurse could not comment because of "federal privacy laws"?

Whose privacy is she trying to protect? The hospital's, I am sure!

The parent were still slightly irked at the hospital? At least...

The baby boy was born in the toilet...? Probably cleaner than some hospitals I've been in.

: Probably cleaner than some hospitals I've been in. Poor mama she must have been so scared! She obviously was not planning on birthing at home!

WOW about woman in California delivers her son in the toilet. After what the hospital told her and her husband. Hospital can't comment because privacy issues. If I was the hospital spokesperson would go into detail about then not. If I was the couple I would write a long letter to the hospital. Thank you.

They're referring specifically to HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. There's been a real push to enforce it in the last five years. Technically, under HIPAA, they're not free to publicly say that any individual person has *ever* been treated at their hospital, much less actually say anything about what happened in any specific case. The only people they can release anything about your medical history to is your insurance company(s) and your doctor(s).

Just saying, she's not making it up, nor is it just for the hospital's convenience.

Julia
who had to get HIPAA certified once, despite the fact that her only patients were toads, being used for experiments.

Toilet water is cold! What a shock that baby must have had. Yikes! :

A co-worker's wife had their baby like that too. She thought she had to do a bm and out came the baby into the toilet! They were NOT planning a homebirth. By the time the paramedics came the co-worker had tied off the cord with his shoelace and they were doing just fine. They got taken to the hospital anyway. Knowing what I do now, I would have just stayed at home if I were in their shoes.

My midwife had one of her babies in the toilet. It was actually one of the stories in the book Baby Catcher (chapter called Fog). It was a planned homebirth though.

That's incredible, though.

The part that kills me is that the baby's born, all is well, and THEN they pack up and go to the hospital? LIke the docs can't let go of the birth for one second, even after it's already happened just fine without their help, thank you very much. :LOL

Yep, one of my dh's co-workers did the same thing. He & his wife were heading out to the car to drive to the hospital while she was in labor. She began pushing right then & there, they went back into the house, he looked for the flooring that would be easiest to clean, and out the baby came. They had called 911 but they didn't arrive until after the birth. They proceeded on to the hospital. That is just the most bizarre thing to me. Why would you do that? Weird.

I have no clue why they would send the mother HOME from the hospital when her contractions where 2 minutes apart, bleeding, pain, etc. If I were the parents I would be more than annoyed at the hospital, I would be very vocal to the media and any hospital official who would listen to me. That is just crazy!

I think it's cool she gave birth at home, but odivously not what she wanted. Pour baby being born in the toilet. That just makes me want to hurrel. It sounds like the baby actually hit the water... ewww! I can't even stand to touch that when I have to clean the toilet, much less have my head dropped into it. LOL

Yeah.... I keep telling my DH (who is so afraid we will have the baby in the car on the 1 hr 45 min drive to the birth center) that if I get in the car and I feel like I need to push, we are turning around and going home.

Gena,

Same here, but I would say to them I would sue the heck out of you if you do that my husband, baby, and me. Thank you.

I was going to mention stories from Baby Catcher too (I see someone already did!) Babies areborn into toilets more often than you'd think, even IN hospitals. It's shocking to the newborn, but that's about it.

I met a guy not too long ago. His wife had one of their kids at home, unplanned UC. He saidthe experience was amazing, she was beautiful. Moments after the baby is born, a news crew shows up and an ambulance to take them to the hospital. Cradling their newborn, they told them all to go away, the baby hadbeen born fine without a hospital, there was no need to go to one now. I thought that was very cool of them

If the article was correct the baby was "face up" which means posterior as well as quick-- who knows what this woman's history was maybe she was in there every day for testing and the nurse was use to her having contractions--

I have caught several babies born in and or just off the edge of the toilet- if mom gets comfortable and really lets go- and then she doesn't want to move just hope there is enough room to get a hand down and keep the baby out of the water---

I scooted to the edge off the seat and pushed Megan out on the toilet. Why can't they make a birthing stool more like a toilet (yanno, w/o the water)?

They have them at all hospitals here in Finland, these 'open chairs' that are seats like toilet seats, but nothing beneath of course.

She probably was not "dilating" or progressing because of the stress of being at the hospital and such a weird environment. Instead of sending her home perhaps they should have asked her to hang out somewhere near by like take a stroll to the cafeteria or the lobby for an hour or two and return for a labor check before going home.

When she got home she probably got all relaxed and such and her little body did what nature intended her to do: Deliver where she felt comfortable!

And those darn toilets, why do they have to be perfect labor furniture but so gross for delivering?
