I want to make wipes!

I had planned on making my own cloth diapers, but after discovering I would have to order fabrics online, and after doing the math, it was more cost effective just to buy them.

But I still have the itch to sew something, so I figured I could make my own cloth wipes. :LOL

So here is the question: What the heck do I make them out of? I used to use baby wash cloths, but they didn't seem to get all of the poop off of the baby. Are there any fabrics that you would recommend? (Preferrably something easy to find).

I made some wipes from chenille and flannel. I used old receiving blankets for the flannel. Terry cloth material with a short loop on the other side makes a nice one layer wipe.

I made ours out of 2 layers of flannel. WE LOVE THEM! we have a fancy one that came with a WAHM diaper that has sherpa on it but we both prefer the plain flannel ones. I just got some fun print flannels on sale and then used plain white on the other side. If you sew them to fit an old wipes box, they're easy to store too. (of course, you can sew them to fit any size container really... we were given a box of wipes for a shower so use that size. Then people know what they're there for if they're changing our daughter... if we let anyone change her that is :LOL since one of us is always with her, i don't think anyone else has changed her yet...!)

have fun!

oh, I don't have a serger so I just turned and topstitched. They look super great.

Thanks for the tips! I would never have thought of using the receiving blankets (I have more than 60, and never use them). I think I'll sew a baby washcloth and a piece of receiving blanket together, so that I have the grippiness of the washcloth if I need it. I won't actually end up having to buy anything, which should make DH happy.

we have a bunch of baby wash cloths that were given to us as wipes as well... we ALWAYS pick the flannel ones out... do up a test one and try them both out before you make your whole stash.

It's GREAT that you have a bunch of receiving blankets to use! It's great to be able to use them eh!

I bought a bunch of odd ball wipes off the TP- they have lots of different fabrics and combinations. My favorites are velour/velour, sherpa/velour and terry/flannel. I like to do the initial wipe with a workhorse wipe, like terry/flannel, then finish up with something soft and lucious like velour/velour.
