I'm not liking snaps!

We just moved up into our size smalls for Charlotte and most of the covers and fitted diapers have snaps on them. As nice as they look, and as easy as they were to apply, I don't like them! I just can't get the fit right! They're plenty tight on the waist, but gap on the legs. And the covers look ridiculous with snaps. They pull too much, and it doesn't lay flat.

I think the fitteds can be salvaged. I pulled the snaps off one this morning and it wasn't easy, seeing as they were hidden, so I had to cut a hole in the seam, and work the caps out that way. After replacing the snaps with Aplix, the diaper fits great!

The covers I'm a little worried about. I can get the snaps off without too many problems, but I worry that even after the Aplix is on, the holes left by the snaps might leak. And they might look funny on the tabs, since the holes will be exposed on the outside.

So now I'm toying with the idea of selling my snap press! I'll probably hang on to it for a while, but I don't think I have enough Aplix to replace all my small diapers and covers, and have enough to finish my medium stash. DH won't let me spend any more money on supplies either.

Grrrr, frustrating! Thanks for letting me vent!

I'm sorry, mama! How frustrating after spending so much $$ on a press and snaps. I'm WAY impressed that you got hidden snaps off, I've had to take a few bombed ones off and it involved wire cutters and closed eyes on the back porch! :LOL

What size and colors of snaps do you have? LMK if you're interested in getting rid of leftovers.

the first couple I tried way back when I started doing snaps, I just used a pair of pliers and broke them off. I use a pair of cuticle trimmers now and it's much easier, and doesn't mess with the fabric as much. Just carefully cut the post off, a little snip at a time, and it will eventually pop off. Just be careful you're not pushing the wrong way. I slipped and stabbed my thumb this morning. Duh..

ETA: I just have white snaps. size 16 & 20. I'll let you know if I decide to get rid of my snap supplies!

That is awful! I hate taking snaps off too. Everytime I use my snap press I have to take off at least one - the first snap part after I switch from male to female or vice-versa, I always forget to switch the die.

Reconsider selling your snap press though, you might want it when Charlotte learns to rip off velcro.

so true!!!

I LOVED our small apliz VB AIOS and well now -its tough because my DD just rips off velcro if shes only in a diaper. So maybe hang onto the SP alittle while. Also maybe you can trade some stuff from Mamas for some more aplix? The fit will usually be better w/ aplix for us too but snaps are alot easier to wash! No snake chain of diapers or pilly stuff to clean out of the velcro :LOL

I don't know if this will help with the snap removal or not - I did a search in the "regular" diapering section on snap removal when I needed to get some off. The one I tried was to heat an ice pick and touch it to the post in the middle. I did not have an ice pick, but I did have a kebab scewer (sp?) that I heated in the flame of my gas stove for a while. It worked great!! Some of them just popped off, the others came off really easily. The trick for me was leaving it touching the post long enough.

I like to use my snap press for other things like bibs, art/hair cutting smocks, bags, snap up sleeping "bags" out of fleece, etc. Mine does not see enough use b/c I like Aplix on my dipes for the fit also. But I am always super happy when I DO need to attach snaps - so much easier than the Snap Setter and hammer I had before, and now I can do "plastic" ones too. Also, I am thinking I will be making side snapping dipes without covers to use as pull-on trainers later.

There was a time - about one week - when I thought I would have to make all sorts of dipes with snaps b/c my ds learned how to remove his diapers. Before I had time to make some, though, I put him in his playpen and soon heard the pop-pop-pop-pop of four little snaps. And he was free! So I still use Aplix (and shorts or pants) b/c the snaps could not keep him covered.

I use my press for lots of things too, mainly because I hate making buttonholes! :

Kari_mom, I don't know if this will help, but I took a Sharpie and wrote "female - SO" (for socket) and "male - ST" (for stud) on my dies so I'd remember which is which. Then I just take a look before applying any snaps.

I did that. I am just so eager to finish up I don't even LOOK first. All my helpers complicate things, I have three boys who come running the minute the snap press hits the table. Thanks for the thought though.
