Help w/FAM or NFP please!

I'm hoping to get going w/NFP or FAM (I may use a diaphram while fertile, not sure). I got the Toni Weschler (sp?) book, and have been reading it. I'm wondering how important it is that I take my temp after 3 hours of sleep. I'm a restless sleeper, and it's not unusual for me to get up at 5 o'clock & adjust the A/C, go to the bathroom, etc., for 5 minutes, then go back to sleep until 7 o'clock when I have to get up for work.

Will this throw everything off? Also, what thermometer do you use? I have an Omron digital celcius one (just the one we happen to have). Either it's not very accurate, or I just run cool.

Thanks for any ideas!

P.S. Can you recommend another good book? Catholic/religious ones are fine, just want details about how this all works.

P.P.S. I should add that I'm BFing, DB is 6.5 months, and I haven't had a "normal" period yet-co-sleeping, etc. I don't know if that makes a difference in terms of temp.

I recommend taking classes from educated and experienced teachers. We took ours through an organization known as the Couple to Couple league and they were wonderful. I called my teachers several times after completing the classes if I had a question, was confused, etc. (I was also breastfeeding while I learned the method--not the easiest way to learn it, but it works just as well)! You can do a search for this organization and find teachers in your area. They also have a self-taught course that you could try, but I just think that having living, breathing human beings who have been there, done that, makes all the difference in the world. The book that is used with their method (the sypto-thermal method of NFP) is titled "The Art of Natural Family Planning" and has been extremely useful to me for referencing/educating myself further. This is the only method/book I have ever used so I can't comment on other ones, but feel free to ask me any questions that you might have about it!

You'll want to take your temperature at a consistent time each day, and after three hours of sleep if possible - can you just plan to take it at 5 am each day?

I don't recall the brand of the thermometer we have, just make sure that it's a basal body thermometer (BBT) and not an ordinary fever thermometer. The fever thermometers don't have enough specificity; you want the basal one so that you can catch the minute gradations.

I have a BD BBT. I love it because it's got a memory, I can take my temp, fall asleep, and then check it when I wake up by turning it back on. :LOL

It's more important that you take your temperature after some rest and consistantly than it is that you take it after three hours of sleep (IME). I'm still nightnursing my daughter, so we wake up once or twice a night so that I can roll over (we cosleep). Sometimes she wakes to nurse at 4:30, but I still take my temperature just before 6:00; I keep my thermometer on top of Mike's clock, and he brings it to me when his alarm goes off. I take my temperature and then I put the thermometer under my pillow and go back to sleep. It's all good. This month, my chart is a mess because of the heatwave, but last month it was beautiful and very clear (an easy-to-interpret, nearly textbook ovulatory chart). I'm tandem nursing my 2.5 year old and 13 month old, and it works very well for me, we've successfully avoided pregnancy for nearly ten months now. It can work very well!
