Thread on thread: a newbie question

I am a super duper sewing newbie and would like to sew some wool soakers from old sweaters. Got the sweaters, got the pattern......

Any recs on type of thread or will any old cotton stuff work?

Am doing this by hand.

For covers 100% poly works better than anything with cotton because cotton can wick moisture from the inside to the outside.
