I am looking into this (tired of paying $5 or more a tube for natural, non-fluoride paste X 2, since DH has to have peppermint and the kids have to have fennel/anise!)
Want to make our own, and have been doing some research on it. Bought some Dr. Bronner's castile today, with an idea to incorporating it into the recipe instead of glycerin (which I have seen dissed as not that hot due to coating of teeth/interference with remineralization). Saw one guy who substituted IVORY bar soap, so I figured DB would be better than that!
This soap is non-toxic, unscented/flavored, contains coconut oil, olive oil, hemp oil, ("with the natural glycerin preserved"), citric acid and vit E. I figure it could replace both the sodium laryl stuff, made from coconut oil for lather, the small quantity of glycerin called for in the recipes I have seen, AND at least some of the "preservative" aspects.
Plan to use baking soda (for mild abrasive and PH balance/antiseptic), sea salt (ditto), tiny amount of the soap, and peppermint/anise or fennel oil (or finely ground up fennel seeds from our huge plant), maybe a touch of tea tree. And purified water, of course, to texture.
Would like to add some soluble minerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium) and some vit C also, but not crucial.
Very interested in putting together a recipe/formula for good PH/remineralization/cleaning and saying so long to paying out the nose for the tubes (though I admit to loving Nature's gate brand and a few others, and have looked to their ingredients for help in creating a recipe, TOO much $$$ and trouble for something I can make at home for far less, (and maybe even better!) imo.
Any experience or advice would be most welcome
