Homemade toothpaste recipes??

I am looking into this (tired of paying $5 or more a tube for natural, non-fluoride paste X 2, since DH has to have peppermint and the kids have to have fennel/anise!)

Want to make our own, and have been doing some research on it. Bought some Dr. Bronner's castile today, with an idea to incorporating it into the recipe instead of glycerin (which I have seen dissed as not that hot due to coating of teeth/interference with remineralization). Saw one guy who substituted IVORY bar soap, so I figured DB would be better than that!

This soap is non-toxic, unscented/flavored, contains coconut oil, olive oil, hemp oil, ("with the natural glycerin preserved"), citric acid and vit E. I figure it could replace both the sodium laryl stuff, made from coconut oil for lather, the small quantity of glycerin called for in the recipes I have seen, AND at least some of the "preservative" aspects.

Plan to use baking soda (for mild abrasive and PH balance/antiseptic), sea salt (ditto), tiny amount of the soap, and peppermint/anise or fennel oil (or finely ground up fennel seeds from our huge plant), maybe a touch of tea tree. And purified water, of course, to texture.

Would like to add some soluble minerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium) and some vit C also, but not crucial.

Very interested in putting together a recipe/formula for good PH/remineralization/cleaning and saying so long to paying out the nose for the tubes (though I admit to loving Nature's gate brand and a few others, and have looked to their ingredients for help in creating a recipe, TOO much $$$ and trouble for something I can make at home for far less, (and maybe even better!) imo.

Any experience or advice would be most welcome

Wow! You are amazing! I'm sorry, I've no experience with making our own t-paste, but if you're successful I'd bet you could market your own! I'd certainly be very interested in it as I'm trying to figure out if I can get some of my 21 month old's cavities to re-mineralize. We currenlty use a Tom's of Maine flouride-free one, but I'd love to experiment and don't want to spring the $ to buy an assortment to see what we reallly like or what works best.

Good luck!!!!!

LOL! My DH doesn't think I am so "amazing", I suspect; he looked WAY dubious when I mentioned my latest experiment! Don't get between this guy and his Nature's Gate peppermint :LOL

(he still holds my experiment with powdered kelp in the spagetti sause against me Ok, to be fair, it WAS horrible and we had to eat out that night, but it was also like 15 yrs ago!! Get over it already, honey )

Oh well, I will look at it as a challenge, trying to put something together he will find tolerable. The kids may be easier to please, but who knows, they could be as much of a challenge as him!

I really like the Nature's Gate brand, which has added minerals and baking soda. And tastes good; DH loves it 'cause it isn't too sweet(no added sweeteners at all) but just in your face peppermint oil.

Also wondering about Zylitol as a sweetener/additive. I've read that it is a very beneficial substance, from an antiseptic/nutritive standpoint. Have yet to find it sold as a powder or pill or liquid, only as an ingredient in other products, but then, I don't get to the big "health food" store much, only the little one near me (and about all I buy there is toothpaste!)

When I did a search for "homemade toothpaste recipes" I got a ton of stuff, so obviously, someone is doing it! See, I thought, I am NOT crazy to have this idea pop into my head

Thanks for the reply

Have you been using this? I am really interested

Zylitol comes in a table sugar form--I guess granules would be a better way toput that: ! (From Spry). I jumped in on the zylitol wagon (gum, toothpaste, granulated; only to find my child has sensitivities to it.:

Am interested in your toothpaste recipe!
