Nursing todders age / weaning age limit

Hello Ladies,

my name is Andrea from Germany and I am nursing my 22 month old son Luca. (6-8 times a day).

A girlfriend of me is still nursing her 5.5 year old daughter 2-3 times a day. In my opinion it is ok.

I would like to ask you how old your nurslings are and whether it would be ok with you to nurse such a long period (4 years to 6 years).

My dd will be 5 tomorrow. She just got through with her usual morning nursing a few minutes ago.

Of course, she says she's having a weaning party on Sunday ~ we shall see!

A child should nurse as long as she needs to and the mom is willing/able to. No age limit.

Yep, exactly.

My DS is still nursing, he is almost 3 1/2. I plan to continue until he is ready to stop.

I think 4-6 is perfectly fine, and in the range of "normal". Well, normal for kids who are lucky enough to have their needs fulfilled without a time limit. Not normal for today’s society. :

My son will be 5 in about 3 months. He's down to nursing for a few seconds, maybe once every 3 weeks or month. I personally know a child who is 7 and still nursing. Seems perfectly normal to me (though I never would have thought so before ds was born ).

My first nursed until he was about 5.5, and actually asked to again last week. I am pregnant and sore and there isn't any milk, but I told him if he still wanted to try when the baby is born he could then. He will be about 6 1/2 then. I don't imagine he will really start nursing very regularly again, but if trying a handful of times after the new baby makes him feel better, it will be okay with me.

My other son is 4 and still nurses 3 or 4 times a week.

I think a child should nurse as long as he/she needs to. Age shouldn't matter--nor should what anyone else thinks is "okay."

Only my youngest is currently nursing (he's 5 1/2.) The older two weaned themselves at 2 1/2 and almost 4.

I don't think I would nurse a 9+ year old, but I'm comfortable with the idea of nursing a 7 or 8 year old.

While our family considers DD to have weaned at 50 months, she tried to nurse (by that I mean, nursed for a few seconds but "gave up") until she was about 5.5. DS will be 4 at the end of the month and still nurses several times in a 24 hour time period. So, I obviously don't have issues in that range.

Beyond 5.5, though I do not think I would have issues, but until I have BTDT I cannot be positive, kwim?

Ds is 5.5 and nurses every couple of weeks now. He has slowed down a lot since he turned 5. I will nurse him until he no longer feels the need to nurse ... regardless of what other people think!

I'm currently nursing my 5 year old ds (1-2 times a day, occasionally skipping days, occasionally nursing 3-4 times a day) and my 3 year old dd (many, many times a day) and I'm 34 weeks pregnant. My oldest self-weaned at age 5, Zachary says he'll wean when he's 7 and Haley says she'll wean when she's 16 or when she has her own baby to nurse. :LOL

My children will nurse as long as they need to. I don't see having a problem nursing a 7+ year old if they still have the need to nurse.

i have 2 in the 4-6 yr bracket (oldest is 5.3)and it doesn't bother us or anyone i know(that i know of). the boys are nursing at least 3x a day and i don't see it decreasing or ending anytime in the next year (middle guy has actually increased his lately). i guess 3 a day is a routine we've established and like. kinda sounds like a food pyramid guideline.

LOL, that cracks me up. We were just talking about the fact that for my dd (4), nursing is like coffee is for other people...until she has her nursing, she doesn't want to talk to ANYBODY!


(Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread, I think extended nursing is a private matter between a mother and child, and if it's working for them, it should continue as long as they like.)
