Cat Pee on carpet....

Thread Starter
One of our three cats has peed in our basement....I had it steam cleaned today but it still smells. Any suggestions? We have hardwoods upstairs so haven't had to deal with this problem before.

(By the way, we have had the cat checked out by the vet to see if its medical...doesn't appear to be...I think he doesn't like that we finished the basement after it being a cement unfinished basement for 5 years, we are invading his territory)

Anyway, I would appreciate any ideas for a safe odor masker/killer that would be safe for carpet. Thanks!!!

Try some baking soda. Also you can sprinkle powdered ginger on any areas you want to discourage the cat from urinatiing on. They don't like the smell of it and will stay away from those areas.

Go to the pet store and get Nature's Miracle, use it GENEROUSLY. It is seriously the only thing to get rid of the smell of dog/cat wee. I use only low-environmental-impact cleaners in my home, but in this case, I make an exception -- and I'm not even sure it's highly chemical. I just know that when dear doggie did a wee on my carpet, I used Nature's Miracle to saturate the stain, and then used water to help lift the whole deal, then (important!) put a folded towel over it, and stood on it to help absorb all that liquid. Next (VERY important!) I put a small fan with the air blowing down on the area, and left it that way for close to 24 hours. I would do this, even on hardwood, because of the cellulose nature of the wood, even with polish on top of it. Good luck.

Petzyme is an enzymatic cleaner that will keep your cat from returning to the same spot again and again, which is what they tend to do after they have "marked" the spot. It doesn't have the perfume that "Nature's Miracle" has and is available at pet stores.

in defense of Nature's Miracle, it's not highly chemical or perfumed. I think it works by the same enzymatic action as Petzyme and it available in pet stores too.

it's ingredients are: water, enzymes, isopropyl alcohol, natural citrus scent

we have a new puppy and use it a lot and it really doesn't smell at all. it also works with vomit -actually any organic stain. we have used it on white carpets and it has removed odor and stain. the only thing is that you have to use it first, I think if you use other cleaners first they could kill the enzymes.

I third the suggestion for Nature's Miracle - it works great! (I even use it for potty training accidents.)

I have used the Natures Miracle and loved it. its the only thing that worked. although it has the citrus oil/scent in it, it didnt leave a perfumey like smell afterwards.

Cats also hate citrus. You definitely need something w/natural enzymes and non-pathogenic bacteria to neutralize the odor. Your local pet store will have a variety of solutions. Check the ingredients. I'd also call a vet or your local humane society to see what they use.
