How many toys do they NEED? (m)

I am downsizing because of space (again). I decided the kids can only have as many clothes as fits in their dresser....as for toys.....do you think that one of those multi bin organizers thingys from Target would hold enough toys for a five year old and an 18 month old? I was thinking of only having as many toys as can fit in one of those....we also have two big bookcases in our living room for more educational type games/toys/puzzles......I'm just done with the big bins of toys and the no room to play.... What do you all think?

Hmm ... I don't suppose they really "need" any toys, but I think my almost-6-year-old ds could get by nicely with the toys that fit in one of those Target things- his toys now tend to have lots of little pieces (Legos, Playmobil, etc.)- plus books and a bike and a few balls, etc. But my almost-2-year-old dd's toys take up more space- toddler/preschooler toys are just bigger! I would want her to have room for dress up items, pretend play props, art supplies, musical instruments, some manipulatives, and some sort of ride-on toy for outside, so I think ideally she would have a bit more space.

They don't really need many toys. The less the better. I think your plan is very good. Kids get more overwhelmed than we might think if they have to much stuff. Look what it makes us feel like. It must be double stressful for kids.

I have a very similar problem!

My family, especially my aunt, spoils the kids rotten. They get new toys all the time. I have taken to regifting alot (shhhhh!) and I am trying to get her to understand that I just don't have the space! I will be donating a ton of toys to our Church nursery.

I didn't think about getting one of those bin-organizers and keeping the toy clutter down to just what would fit in there. Good idea!!!
