tums or mylanta?

HI all,
I'm entering my 11th week of pregnancy (due 2/28). Unfortunately, I am still feeling quite a bit of queasiness, partly due to the pregnancy but also the hot, humid weather isn't helping.

I hardly ever take meds for stomach upset and am just wondering if anyone has taken tums or mylanta and which has helped more. All day long I have sort of a "sour stomach" feeling--it is so nasty because it is just there all the time, in the background.

I have both in the house and was going to go read the labels to see what each was used for but I thought I would check here to see if anyone has used these meds for that sour, churning stomach feeling.

TIA.

Same here- that terrible taste in my mouth is driving me crazy! I'm down and out the entire middle of the day.

I've heard bad things about both. I would suggest getting some candied or crystallized ginger and eat a small piece of it whenever you feel nauseous. Works great for me every time and absolutely no harm to the baby. You can find it almost everywhere. At my grocery store, I can find it in the "Asian Foods" aisle. At the local health food store, I can find it in many different forms.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure I saw a fairly lengthy thread about this in the I'm Pregnant forum a few weeks ago. Try doing a search there. Hope your belly gets feeling better soon!

Depending on my symptoms I use both of them at seperate times. I only use the malox tablets if I am having severe gas and tummy pains, or I just use the tums for anything else. They are safe to take in moderation, and are good for your calcium intake, just keep in mind that taking too much isnt a good thing as is always the case with anything.

I tried the candied ginger in my first pregnancy and didn't like the taste at all. Papaya enzymes are also gross if I try to chew them but I can swallow them whole sometimes. They'd probably taste fine if I weren't pregnant and nauseous, but then I wouldn't need them, LOL!

I have read that calcium carbonate (ingredient in Tums) is safe during pregnancy. I think Rolaids has a second ingredient along with the calcium carbonate, so I would choose Tums over Rolaids. Not sure what is in Mylanta.

One more thing, I found that my indigestion was markedly better when I wasn't wearing a bra (or anything else fitted around the middle), so I have found ways to go bra-less. I finally bought some new bras today that are quite loose, so I may be able to wear one again.

Good luck; hope you're feeling better soon!

I think candied ginger is something that you have to develop a taste for. It's definitely not easy for me to eat. Then again, I think Tums taste disgusting too.

I noticed my nausea was very mild if I ate something hourly and also as soon as I woke up in the morning. I actually kept crackers and water by my bed and this really helped. This past weak, my nausea has gone away!! Woo hoo! I know it will return in the 8th month though.

Thanks, everyone for your suggestions.
Bellydancer, I think tums are gross too! I tend not to take stomach meds...eyewww. Just the thought of swallowing pills lately grosses me out. Maybe I could try the candied ginger...never tried it before.
Thanks to honeybee'smama, cajunmama, ellasmama, and lilgsmommy for your posts as well.
Honeybee's mama, thanks for the kind words...I hope my tummy feels better soon too.
Cajunmama, I hope you are feeling better soon too. Today I ate very mild foods (a muffin for breakfast, chicken soup) and it helped. I had been so sick of not eating that I tried eating like a normal person the last few days...big mistake.

Tumms is way milder and more "natural" than mylanta, it's calcium!

In my experience, neither of them work very well. My OB said that both are very safe during pregnancy. I take T*ums if I've eaten a bit too much, and it does settle my stomach. It doesn't work for nausea or heartburn very well, though. The liquid My*lanta seems good for cooling my esophagus when I have really bad heartburn, but it only works temporarily. I find that kefir or yogurt works better, actually!

The only benefit I found to taking T*ums when I had really awful morning sickness is that it neutralized stomach acid and made throwing up less painful.
