DS2 Colin was born late Sunday night. I had been having contractions from wed - sunday. I was dialating, 3cm on Fri and then 5 on Sun am. Because we live so far from the hospital my midwife gave me the choice to break the water on Sunday. I agreed, and a good thing I did. I wandered around the hopsital all afternoon with my husband & doula & midwife. All I felt were "period cramps" until I hit transition, 8cm. And it hit really hard and fast. 1 1/2 hours later Colin arrived. Had I wandered around in slow labor for days and suddenly hit transition I would have been at home, unable to get in a car, no doula, husband at least 30 minutes away, etc. Something I was not comfortable with. My hips proved a major obsticle. They have caused me a lot of pain and I had been in PT for months due to them. They actually slowed things down at the end. They caused so much extra pain I was unable to get into a position to help Colin come out for quite some time. My great midwife helped prevent any tearing
Colin is a tiny baby for us 9 lbs, 20". (My last was 10 lbs, 22 1/5")
Our hospital is a wonderful one. No one bats an eye when you decline hep b. The circumscision dr encourages you not to. You get off the elevator on the maternity floor and are greeted with breastfeeding is best display along with slings and other AP stuff. Even the nurses are anti formula.
