she's here, and finally OK! {warning- Special Care Nursery Involved}

Sorry ladies, our internet connection at home is gone and since we just got out of the special care nursery on Saturday, this is the first chance I've had to get online at all.. but here's the vital info:

Name: Cathleen Emma-Claire
DOB: 02 August 2005
Time: 0832
Weight: 6 lbs 7 ozs
Length: 18 1/2 inches

She was born via c-section as planned, and that was about the only thing that went as planned. She went back to my room with me at 0900 to recieve her Vitamin K, and we were working on getting her to latch, but she was having no part of it and started crying and choking.. the next couple hours, in fact much of that first day, is a blur. The long and short of it is she ended up in special care nursery at thirty minutes old and didn't get out until Saturday. At first they thought she had either moderate transition problems or pneumonia. There was a ton of water in her lungs, they woulnd't stay inflated properly on their own, and her pulse, heart rate and respirations were far too high. she was started on anti-biotics at 0800 on Wednesday, and the plan was seven days in special care on antibiotics and daily x rays. On Friday her scans were finally clear, and she was on room air with no difficulty. I was discharged, and let me tell you that even when Bug was in the NICU, I didn't have half the trouble leaving the hospital. With Bug, we knew what was wrong and what wasn't, and knew that we'd be less than a block away with an emergency transport at our disposal. With Em, I was a half hour away minimum. And even though she'd shown signs of improvement, and the nurses all expected her to go home over the weekend, I was still a nervous wreck.

On Saturday, I returned to the SCN to find her in an open bed, with only the basic monitors and no IV's. They gave her the last dose of her antibiotics at 0900, and the doctor came in and reviewed her blood work and scans at 1300. By 1330 she was officially discharged with orders to see her ped within seven days, and to call if she started having any issues, and of course to double time it or 911 if she started having respiratory issues. So far, there's been nothing of any major concern. She's a little jaundiced, to my eyes, a bit too yellow in the eyeballs in the morning, and only running about four dirty diapers a day, though two of them are usually rather large quanity. She's a lazy eater, but i try to wake her up, strip her down and all that and get her to eat about every three hours if she's not eaten already.

Which leads to the big question. Answer: she's on EBM. We tried nursing and it went okay, but she was still hungry. So we're using a Medela Symphony that we're renting from the hospital. It's going alright, we've gotten over the hump in the supply area I think, and the rest of it is stress related and will hopefully be resolved in the next two weeks as we finally will have the money to get a place of our own.

So that's the long and short of it, and she's wide awake, so I'll leave it there. If she goes to sleep and the other two settle down before we have to head home, I'll try to get some of her pictures uploaded to photobucket and link them up. We didn't get a hospital photo, guess the request got lost in the busyness of being in special care adn what not. but we've got a ton of pictures, thanks to camera happy grandparents, and Tony, who has taken pictures of everything practically since we checked into the hospital.

I'm glad that she's home and improving now. dd was little as well and had a lot of problems being sleepy. We mostly did smaller meals and rotated breasts on 4 hr schedules to prevent foremilk imbalance. That seemed to help a lot and she gained pretty quickly.
I also had a c-section with her but still managed to make sure she ate at least every 2 hours even at night. I think that helped a lot.
For dd it seemed to help if I stroked her jaw line while she nursed to keep her awake. My LC said that works for some kids while other like having their back or feet rubbed. Kind of vigorously as a way to keep them awake.

Well, congratulations, mama! I'm so glad Em is doing better, and I hope you are recovering as well. I'm especially thrilled that you are doing whatever you have to do to get her your breast milk, although I'm sure you are mourning not being able to nurse her directly right now.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you!

I'm glad she's home and doing well. Having a baby in the NICU is no fun at all.

Congratulations to you and your family!

not by much. Thirty eight weeks three days. we know the date of conception, and the first four ultrasounds agreed with us on dates, as did the first level two ultrasound, which used bone lengths and other baselines to determine fetal age...

Right now it seems we're battling the jaundice. She's only awake about an hour and a half total, in stops and starts, in twenty four hours, and I'm worried. We have a ped appointment in the a.m. and its' going to be the first thing I bring up.... any suggestions on ways to keep her awake? I tried stripping her down with and without changing her diaper, and it doesn't seem to work. She's taking in two to four ounces about every three hours, but she's not getting much out. She gets hiccups after almost every feeding, and practically nothing makes her burp... I'm worried I may have to switch to formula if she doesn't start coloring up and poo'ing the way she should...
