GA risks?

What are the risks for putting my 21 mo old under a general anasthetic (GA) to have cavities filled? They need treatment, and he's a sensitive boy who would be absolutely traumatized if treated while awake. We have what sounds like a resonable and skilled dental team, but everyone seems so scared of a GA. Am I missing something? Of course I know there are some risks and have the dentist's basic literature about the process, but they make it sound like they're careful and prepared for emergencies. Is there more to it than I'm being told? (Like I need more to worry about in my life, it's hard enough to brush ds' teeth!)

Oh, ds does have really big tonsils, so there's some chance the work will get done in a hospital setting to more closely monitor his breathing during recovery. Anyone got experience with this? Anyone?!!

The lit package I rec'd from the ped dentist indicated that GA has more risk for health complications than other measures. Keeping in mind that I did not like this dentist *at all* (she thinks babies should be weaned fr nursing to sleep at 12 mos because BM will rot the teeth and also that amalgam fillings are totally safe for *children*), I think it sounds logical that GA would carry more risk to it. It is a difficult situation to be in, overall.
