Trip to hospital-decels

I have had a long couple of days. Contractions started coming on strong on Wednesday night, I dilated to 3cm, 75%, -2 station. Then petered out, nothing. Thursday night same thing. Midwife came over and checked me, we listened to FHR through contraction and heard some decels, nothing too concerning. Around 3am, I decided to listen and now had some major decels lasting whole contraction and not recovering for about 30sec. So after talking with 2 other midwives and doctor, decide to go get monitored at hospital.

Of course, they weren't helpful at all. Spent day on monitor, but since contractions again petered out, couldn't really see the decels. Had a ultrasound, lots of cord around neck, head, chest. Cord doesn't bother me, I have had several deliveries where cord was wrapped around up to 4 times, but since we are having the decels, I don't like it. I am worried that if baby can't tolerate the contractions now, how will he tolerate when the real thing kicks in? Also, what kind of damage does constantly being strangled day after day do? Obviously, it is bothering him.

so back home after wasted day and being told that if, during labor, he gets worse, I can always get a c-section. Thanks. I guess that's the difference between us midwives and the medical model. We try to prevent emergencies, they just wait until it becomes an emergency and then deal with it.

so today I am staying in the birthing tub on all fours as much as possible, taking pulsatilla, and basically resting (I am exhausted after being up since Wednesday!). Monday I will get adjusted if possible.

Good luck to all the other mamas in labor or soon to be!

Barb,

The decels are what made me end up with a c-section last week. From what I was told, my placenta was half the size of a healthy placenta, and not getting much blood flow in either direction. My baby was tiny and postdate by 4 days. I am not a midwife or a doctor (though both ended up attending this labor and birth), but I am grateful that a c-section was an option for me. It sounds to me like my baby may not have been able to handle full-blown labor. I am sad and disappointed that this is how it ended up, but I know I can make peace with it in time, as you will be able to if something similar happens to you.

I hope you are able to change the situation, truly I do -- but if you can't, take heart. My baby was born to the sound of her daddy and I singing to her in the operating room. That was my way of making a c-section birth more loving. Maybe you can find something similar if this happens to you and your family.

Sending you love...
