You know, I went to his site and I found one thing greatly disturbing: He REALLY pushes for an extremely low-fat diet. I think that's great for older kids, men, and non-pregnant or lactating women, but I think that's very bad news for young kids (if they are not still bf till they're about 3-4 at least, which doesn't often happen in the Western world) and pregnant and lactating women who NEED extra fat! I think pregnant women need it more than lactating, but I'm not sure. It's alarming to me, actually. Other than that, he seems great.

I like Dr. Gordon, too. So much so that I haven't bought a new copy of The Baby Book. (I had one with dd, sold it when I heard there was a revised edition, picked up Dr. Gordon's books somewhere in there, and haven't looked back.) It is too bad, because I think Dr. Sears is more visible to the 'mainstream.' Oh well.

I saw Dr. Sears face on a box of Kashi children's cereal too. Granted it is whole grain, no artificial colors etc.

The graphics on this site are awful!

I actually have quite the parenting library here at home. What you're saying about needing several books to make up Sears' The Baby Book is the reason I despair. I have found that TBB is a great resource to give/recommend to friends. It's not too crunchy, so mainstreamy moms find it accessible and it helps to bring them over to AP. It has a ton of info, most of which I agree with. And their "parenting library" is good in general, too. I don't have their pregnancy book but do own The Birth Book and thought it was pretty level-headed and would be a good book for somebody who is interested in natural birth but not a devotee and ready for something more new-agey/ultragranola like Birthing From Within or Ina May's books. The Discipline Book is very good and sensible.

On the whole, it's easier to say "this author writes good books" to a friend than to give them a list of books, you know? So I find the concerns in this thread disappointing, I don't feel like I can recommend him in good conscience but I still think that overall his books are a great resource for the types of moms that I know.

I totally agree Funshine. As a semi-soggy first time mom TBB was a good gentle introduction to a more crunchy approach. I rejected a lot of it as too much at first but was gradually won over. The Birth Book is perfect for women who haven't decided what they want or are ambivalent about birth. I think it helps women make good choices without a huge amount of baggage. It is sad to find out all this bad stuff.

: Sorry I didn't read that. That's horrible PR and I think you should write back to him telling him how dissapointed you are in the fashion he handled this issue. We should all write to him to tell him what our disappointnents are. He can't possibly ignore all of us right?

It's sad isn't it? I guess we each have to make our own choices about which serves the greater good, buying his products or not buying them. There are arguments for both sides. Personally I can't financially support someone who makes money from baby formula ads, I get a sick feeling in my gut. But if his books are going to improve life for a family with young children that is hard to argue with.

Then again, I hear a lot of criticism of his "voice," his writing style in The Baby Book being condescending, so I would hesitate to buy it for gifts for that reason...although I found his style reassuring instead when I was a new mom.

Dr. Sears pushes formula and MLM schemes????? WTF!!!!

I just found AP last year, when I was looking into parenting philosophies. I didn't look very long, because AP matched what I wanted to do. I just didn't know it had a name. I got TBB as my first book about babies. I like it, and planned to but many more of his books. Maybe I will still, but.....

What's next????? LLL starts promoting bottles with disposable liners?

Is the Dr. Robert Sears that's in the cord blood registry ads Dr. Sears' son? I've kind of wondered about that. Don't really know what to think of CBR.

He does have a son named Robert who is also a pediatrician.

I haven't seen that one. I'm still trying to get over CCR's "Fortunate Son" as a "patriotic" jingle for Wrangler jeans. And LedZep's "Rock and Roll" for Cadillac! :Puke
