Trying to serge on my sewing macine

OK! I may be in this forum a lot for awhile because i am starting to figure out my machine and am having all sorts of questions. First of all, i am trying to serge the ends of 2 pieces of flannel together and i have a serge mode on my machine, but when i do it, it just looks like a really thick chain type of stitch. Isn't serging the stitch that wraps around and looks loopy? (sorry, i am trying my best to describe myelf) Like the ends of washcloths? I can't figure out how to make it look right.

I have a serger, and it does make a chain, but when you are feeding fabric through, it should stitch it properly. I would assume it would be the same for your machine.
