Who inspired your breastfeeding?? - Page 3

My mom breastfed my sister and I for 2.5 years each. She stood up to doctors that told her she was deranged and sick for bfing that long and family that thought she was just a hippie. I am the crunchiest of the family and never gave it a thought. I alway thought that formula was just for adopted babies too . Having my own kids has brought out the lactivist in me. Ds self weaned and dd is 2 and still going strong. I am proud of the fact that my son is mystified by bottles and has loudly asked me in public if the crying baby wanted boobie I hope he and his sister both pass on the beauty of breastfeeding to their families.

I had absolutely no breastfeeding examples while I was growing up. I and my 2 sisters were all formula-fed, and so were all our friends, cousins, neighbors, etc., as far as I know.

The first real exposure I had to breastfeeding was in my mid-20s, when I became friends with another young woman who was a dietitian working for WIC. She talked about breastfeeding a lot, even though she wasn't yet a mom and neither was I. And then she walked her talk when she eventually had a baby.

That's what really got me thinking about breastfeeding. And the more I looked into it on my own, the more obvious it became to me that I would breastfeed.

I was going to go back to work after DS was born and everyone thought I would fail at bf-ing once I began WOH, and they basically said, "so why start?" Then I had major difficulties in the first few months, but I was soooo stubborn because I wanted to prove them all WRONG. So I did :LOL I WOH for about 6 mos. and successfully pumped while away/nursed while home. Now I WAH and we are still going!!!!

In 1977, I joined a natural foods co-op and met a nursing mother there. I liked how she mothered her children. She also had her babies at home. I also became involved in the New Age movement around the same time. One of the mothers there was bf her new baby. It just seemed like a neat thing to do.

Well, I got pregnant in 1978 and had my first in 1979. Nursing him was a wonderful experience.

My second was born in 1987, and was bf, too. My nursing days are just a memory now, but I hope that if I become a grandmother, that my DIL's will breastfeed my grandchildren.
