Horrible extraction experience - WWYD?

Hi there,

I really need some input on my experiences today, and would value your opinions wise mamas. Warning - the following may make you cringe

I had my 3 impacted wisdom teeth extracted by a dental surgeon today. I specifically asked beforehand how heavy the sedation would be (it was IV sedation, Versed I think), and was told that many people are fast asleep, and those who aren't don't remember a thing, they're so relaxed. Riiiiight.

In a nutshell, the sedation was light, and what's worse the local anaesthetic was not adequate. I was pretty much fully conscious, and in so much pain that I had tears pouring down my face, and I was shaking so hard that the nurses had to hold my legs still I was trying to tell the surgeon that it hurt, and his reply was that it *couldn't* hurt! WTF? and that I had had extra local anyway...So for 70 minutes I had a guy digging through my jaw and yanking out my teeth - absolutely the worst pain experience of my life. My feelings were completely dismissed, and I felt incredibly scared.

WWYD? Do I write a letter to my dentist about this? (he referred me to the surgeon as he felt that my case was too risky for him to tackle) Or am I overreacting? Is it normal to be in that much pain during a wisdom tooth extraction?

Oh and just to make matters even more fun, after stiching up he left a 2 foot piece of bloody suture in my hair! Nice : Dh was really impressed...NOT!

Thoughts please...

I'm so sorry that you had to endure that cruel, unsympathetic, unprofessional!

Quite frankly, I would write a letter to/tell anyone that will listen! No one else should have to suffer the way you did!

That is rediculous, that he wouldn't listen to you that you were still in pain!
Obviously your body language is all that he had to pay attention too!

I'm so sorry mama!

Ouch, Ouch, Ouch!!! You should not have felt a thing. Shame on the doctor, and on everyone else involved who witnessed it and did nothing! Where did this guy get his license? You should complain loudly to who ever has the power to stop this guy from practicing. Talk to a lawyer too if you have the energy or means to do it. This sounds like major trauma. Make sure your dentist never refers anyone there again. I've never been through this, but I am very angry on your behalf. I'd think you're entitled to some form of compensation. It can't hurt to do a little research, but I'm not sure how to get you started. If I get any ideas, I'll post again. In the mean time, be sure to take care of yourself. Your body has been through a shock and you need some extra nurturing. If you find you start having problems dealing with it, talk to a counselor who might be able to give you some advice or help you figure out where to send complaints. This just sounds terrible and you need to be around people who will validate your feelings.

Gentle hugs to you!!!

yikes! sounds horrible! i had my wisdom teeth removed a couple of years ago, but they weren't impacted. one was sorta partially through (kinda even with the gumline) and it was the hardest for the dentist to get and there was a lot of rooting around and digging and yanking, BUT i did NOT feel pain. this was just done with a local (lidocaine). i would definitely be talking to my dentist and also to the oral surgeon's office. your dentist should know what happened so referrals can go to someone else and maybe write a letter to the oral surgeon's office?

And they wonder way so many are afraid to go to the dentist?!?!
I had a similar experience a few years ago...lets just say I still have 3 of the 4 wisdom teeth he was set to remove!

Sorry you couldn't escape.

Oh my goodness! That it absolutely horrible

I'm not sure what I would do, but DEFINITELY do something!
Talk to your Dentist for sure...the fact that they had to HOLD your legs down should've given them more than a small clue that things were not right; and the fact that the Doctor just dismissed you like that is absolutely, completely unacceptable : !

You really need to make a big stink about this or he's just going to keep doing it!
Even I know that different people have different pain relief needs

Sorry, this just makes me so angry for you! I can't believe that they had to hold you down, you had tears running down your face and you tried to tell him it hurt and you were so completely dismissed. I'm disgusted!

Really, you need to get this to some higher ups, this should never have happened, and I'm sorry it did

Hopefully someone else will be able to advise you on the proper channels to take this...and keep us updated

I hope your recovery is much better than the operation, you will be in my thoughts/prayers
