I'd Like to Make Wooden Teethers ...

Scheelimama's thread reminded me I wanted to ask you all about this ... (thanks Scheelimama for bringin it up! ).

I'd like to make wooden teething rings and sell them locally. I've done some preliminary research, and it looks like a lot of the materials I'd need are fairly cheap to obtain online in bulk.

I'm specifically interested in making a wooden version of this with large spherical beads ... maybe some a little fancier with wooden animals, etc. As long as there aren't sharp edges on it ...

Anybody know where I can find a source for buying wooden beads and rings in bulk? There are lots of places online to buy these, but I have to be careful about finishes obviously since they are intended for infants.

What are you thinking of using for the ring, the part holding all the beads? Just curious. That would make a neat teething toy too. I asked a friend whose husband makes lots of wooden toys about making a teething toy and she said he doesn't like to do them because of the liability of splintering. Just something to think about. Now, I'm nervous to buy any wood pieces to make something for teething.

Not really sure, that's one of the things I've been researching ... like what stringing material would work well, be natural and not break, of course.

My inspiration for the wooden teether came from this really cute Haba teether I found for DS at the local Sciencecenter. It is half wooden ring and half cylindrical rainbow beads, all wood. I believe it's on some kind of elastic band so the beads can move around a lot. I'm not sure where to get that type of thing ...

As for splintering ... I have to say that I would expect considerable and visible wear on a wooden teether before it splintered. Probably something that should be checked each day before it is given to the child.

So, I really like the wooden ring ones, I already wrote to a manufacturer today to ask about theirs being non-toxic, etc. DS also really likes the beaded kind, but I'd prefer to give him something natural vs. the plastic ones we find in the store.
