Fabric for mei tai carrier?

I'm ready to make my mei tei carrier, but I can't think of what kind of fabric to use. The instructions I have say to use a heavy duty material like upholstery or canvas, but most mei teis I've seen are not made of a heavy material and they're soft.

What do you recommend?

I used twill. It is softer than denim and feels sort of sturdy. I made one from canvas- and its awful! The canvas was hard to sew and the fabic is uncomforable.

You are right that the most beautiful mei ties are made of silk, but I think there are special rules about sewing silk- certain needles to use and certain stiches that I don't know anything about.
