big booboo

I posted a thread a while back asking theoretically what to tell DS about circ... I can't believe what's happened now!!

Last week my friend was here and we were discussing circ while DS was ingrossed in his toys in the next room. She asked me what I'd say when DS asks about why Dad's penis is different and I explained that it depends on how old he is. She was concerned b/c she thinks he'll notice when he's very young and that it will be a difficult topic. I said that if he's that young I'll just say that Daddy had a booboo on his penis, and that....

[DS bursts into room with a look of shock on his face.] "Daddy booboo penis! Daddy booboo penis! Daddy booboo penis!"

I told him that it's better now and doesn't hurt. Daddy's OK.

This morning early when DS woke up he said (among his other musings) "Daddy penis booboo," with a very sad face.

What the h*** have I done?!

Aw, that is so cute that he is so concerned about his Daddy.

I'm curious as to what was your friends reaction to him running in saying "Daddy booboo penis! Daddy booboo penis! Daddy booboo penis!"? Did she apologize for pressing the issue, thus bringing it to your son's attention earlier than planned? In any event, I think that was a pretty good start on explaining the differences between circ and intact.

My concern is that this was brought to his attention before he was curious and ready to know. It's my fault that I said it in terms he could understand without thinking. My friend was shocked like me, and I don't think she is to blame.

He's WAY too young to understand. If he says it again I would just say no, Daddy's ok, because really he is. He HAD a boo-boo when he was a baby, but it's healed now. While parts are missing, it's no longer an actual boo-boo, so you wouldn't be lying. KWIM? That's what I would do.

I think my 6 year old is just finally getting to an age where I would be sure that he understood what I was talking about if it came up. I mean, I guess he would have sort of gotten it at a younger age, but I think now he'd REALLY get it, if that makes any sense. Just last night in the tub, he was trying to get his little brother to retract and swish his penis in the water and I had to tell him that ds2's doesn't retract yet. And I felt kinda bad b/c I'm not sure if ds1's should really be retractile yet, but he was forcibly retracted by a dumb ped at 13 mos. And we had a little conversation on why babies' penises don't retract (I just said wouldn't it be yucky to poop in a diaper and get poop inside your penis? And he totally understood that. LOL!) I'm just waiting for it to come up at religious school.
