Fillings in baby teeth or not?

I just took all 4 of us to the dentist today. This is the first time the kids have been to this particular dentist because our insurance changed since their last checkup.

The dentist told me "whatever you're doing, keep doing it" (I brush my teeth with baking soda twice a day and floss daily.) Ds got his teeth counted and cleaned.

Both DDs, unfortunately, had some decay in baby teeth. DD10 has one small cavity that he offered to fix today, but I felt we'd been in the office long enough so I declined doing that today. DD9 has pretty bad decay in the area around other fillings, in teeth that the dentist estimates will fall out in about a year or two. In his opinion, these teeth NEED to get fixed.

Emotionally, Dd9 is a wreck. She had a rather unpleasant experience today and told me she does NOT want to go back to that particular dentist. She's feeling sick right now and has a bad taste in her mouth from the flouride treatment (even after eating.)

I have an appt to get the girls' teeth fixed in a week and a half. If I change dentists, I doubt I could get an appt in the next 2 weeks (before school starts.)

What would happen if we don't get the teeth fixed? Is it unsafe to have the dentist drilling next to amalgram fillings? Those fillings were put in before I knew about the mercury issue, and I can't see the point in having them removed from baby teeth.

Should I cancell the appts or keep them?

I follow the advice that my kids' ped dentist gave me...Decay, or a cavity, in a in baby teeth don't need to be fixed unless the child is complaining about their teeth.

I trust our ped dentist. He is runs a fabulous practice and works well with kids of all ages. I really believe that he has a good approach, in dentistry, for kids.

Is there another dentist that you could try, since your daughter doesn't want to go back?

Maybe if the first dental office that you visited refers you to another dentist, then you could in quickly. That's how I found our current dentist...ds cried at the first dentist office that we visited. The dentists ,then, refered us to our current dentist.

OK, now I'm leaning towards cancelling the appts, emphasizing good oral hygeine (which has been lacking over the summer) and having their teeth re-checked in 6m. Anybody have any more input?
