Breastfeeding after tooth extraction

Greetings Mom,

This is my first post, but the reading that I have done on this board over the last month and a half has been very valuable to my family and me. I'd like to extend my thanks for that up front... Now, on to my situation and specific question. My 19 month old dd had 4 teeth extracted this morning, and we were advised to not bf for the next 24 hours b/c the sucking would interfere with clotting. Right after the procedure and several times this morning, she really wanted to nurse for comfort. Now she is doing OK, but I know that this is going to come again before we pass the 24 hour window. My thinking (and I recognize that my previous thinking has led to a 19 month old with hardly any teeth) is that the sucking motion from nursing is different from a straw or bottle. Do you all have any opinions or advice based on your past experience in this situation?

I really look forward to your responses.

Thanks - Nikia

Yes it's different, it will actually put pressure there and help. For more info try pming SmileMomma on here, she's a dentist and can probably reassure you.
