Kenmore 1753?

What can you ladies tell me about a Kenmore 1753? I got it at a thrift store for $20. It came mounted on a sewing table, is in great shape, and has all the special feet and attachments! I'm so excited but I wonder if my excitement is justified?


Tell me all you know please!

Is it an old one or new? If it's old (like I'm thinking) you need some more numbers on your model #.
I have a 158-17550 - green old thing from Kenmore.

The good thing about old and new Kenmores is that you can still get parts and manuals from them at http://www3.sears.com/

I have also found them to be really sturdy. $20 sounds like a great deal especially if you got a cabinet too!!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it's old. Real nice pistachio green color. Let me go check for the model number. I know the manual just says Model 1753 zigzag.

Mine's pistachio too - and if you tilt up the machine there should be a little plate telling you the model #.
These machines are tough. I have reupholstered chairs in vinyl with mine and it didn't flinch.

OK, the whole # is 158.17530. About what year do you think this is from? That's great to know they're really sturdy! So when I have questions about it can I ask you?

You're welcome to ask! It sounds like yours is the closest to mine of anyone I've met so far. I am not sure exactly what year it's from, but my guess is early 60's.

Does yours look much like this?

it looks identical as far as i can tell! i might need your help threading through the tension thing...i don't think i did it right. the drawing in the manual is quite vague.

For threading the tension, all you do is wrap it clockwise around, hold the thread (so no more pulls off the spool) and pull the end up until it snaps behind the little wire on the tension.
